Hong Kong and China both recorded wins as matches eventually got underway on Day Two of the Women’s Sano City International Trophy.

The morning match between hosts Japan and tournament favourites Hong Kong was impacted by the overnight rain, but Japanese players and staff all worked hard to dry the key areas so a game could be played, eventually starting a nine-over contest just after midday.

Having won the toss and opted to bowl, Japan had chances in the field but the opening pair of Natasha Miles (34 from 23 balls) and Kary Chan (36 from 30) put on 77 for the opening partnership on the way to 86 for three from none overs, which looked a formidable total.

Although Japan showed some defiance with the bat, Chan was again prominent with the ball, striking twice in her opening over to severely dent the Japanese chase.

Debutant Ayaka Kato-Stafford held things together with 28* from 25 balls, but could only carry Japan up to 67 for three meaning a win by nine wickets for Hong Kong.

In the afternoon a boisterous contest between China and Philippines ended in a five wicket win for China for whom Ma Ruike starred. After winning the toss and opting to bowl, the Chinese captain would have been delighted as Ruike took four wickets at the cost of just a single run to bowl Philippines out for 50.

Karri Keen gave the Philippines plenty to cheer about in the field, taking three for 11 herself, but China were able to pass the total in the 15th over for a relatively comfortable win.

Play continues on Thursday.
