Yanagida Inspires Japan to Win Against China

Captain Mai Yanagida dug her team out of trouble to book a place in the Women’s East Asia Cup Final in Incheon.
After winning the toss and batting first, Japan suffered a calamitous start as the China bowlers dismissed six out of the top seven for just eight runs.
Yanagida could only watch in dismay as chaos reigned at the other end, but was grateful to Seika Sumi who eventually offered some support.
The recovery came in a 42-run partnership for the seventh wicket, before another 21 runs were added for the eighth with Erika Toguchi-Quinn.
Yanagida brought up her second international half century from the final ball of the innings with her sixth boundary as she finished 51* from 60 balls, more than half the team total of 90 for nine.
Yanagida’s bowling attack remains the strength of the team and Nonoha Yasumoto, Shimako Kato and Toguchi-Quinn collected two wickets each to slow China’s chase.
Japan eventually had enough runs on the board, restricting China to 71 for eight and earning the win by 19 runs.
That means Japan will contest the tournament final tomorrow against defending champions Hong Kong who are chasing their third title, while Japan hope for a first.
