Kurumi Ota became the Women’s Japan National Team’s leading wicket-taker as her team made the perfect start to the five match series against Singapore with a resounding nine-wicket win.
After winning the toss and choosing to bowl, Japan kept things tight in the opening exchanges as Singapore found it difficult to score.
It took a run out to break the opening partnership in the eighth over, but GK Diviya battled hard to top score with 20 as wickets began to fall around her.
Ota’s big moment came in the 14th over as she Akari Nishimura took a high catch to dismiss Roshini Seth and Japan rode the wave of positivity to bowl Singapore all out for just 53 in the final over, Ahilya Chandel doing most of the damage with three wickets for just eight runs which earned her the MVP award.
The Japanese opening batters got their team off to a flyer from the start as both Hinase Goto (17 from 19 balls) and Erika Oda (29 not out from 24) struck boundaries to take Japan to 37/0 at the end of the powerplay and effectively end the game as a contest.
Oda ended things in the ninth over as she struck her fourth boundary of the innings, showing no ill-effects from the knee surgery she had just a few months ago.
Speaking after the match Ota (two for 12) said: “I am honoured to be the leading wicket-taker for Japan Women. I want to keep playing as long as I can and would like to thank everyone for their support.“
She now has 47 wickets in 71 matches, passing the previous holder Shizuka Miyaji who had 45 wickets in 75 appearances.
