Japan Edge Philippines in Opener of East Asia Qualifier

The Men’s Japan National Team edged a tight contest in the opening match of the ICC Men’s T20WC East Asia Pacific – Sub-Regional ‘B’ 2024, defeating Philippines by two wickets.

After winning the toss and choosing to bat, the fast start Philippines hoped for never materialised as Japan grabbed the early initiative.

A steadying partnership of 36 from 42 balls between Kulwinderjeet Singh (33 from 29) and Nivek Tanner (29 from 40) built a recovery from 11 for three but all six Japanese bowlers picked up wickets to keep the scoring in check.

Sabaorish Ravichandran led the way with an outstanding spell of four overs two wickets for just seven runs as Philippines finished 96 for nine from their 2o overs.

In the chase Japan also lost early wickets before Alex Shirai-Patmore (20 from 27) and Wataru Miyauchi (23 from 33) rebuilt but Philippines kept pegging Japan.

Ultimately back-to-back boundaries from Declan Suzuki broke the back of the chase, leaving just three needed from the final over which Japan made with just two wickets and one ball to spare.

Japan will take on South Korea in their second match of the tournament on Sunday 29th September at 14:00. The match can be followed live , while the tournament will all be live streamed on icc.com/videos
