Japan Defeats Cambodia In Asian Games Opener

The Men’s Japan National team won their opening match of the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou on Wednesday, 27th September.

The opposition, SE Asian Games Gold Medal winners Cambodia, fought hard right to the end but Japan had enough.

After being asked to bowl first the Japanese team made early inroads through a smart stumping by Alex Shirai-Patmore off Ibby Takahashi, before a sharp run out from Lachlan Yamamoto-Lake had Cambodia 12 for two in the third over.

A 30-run partnership followed, from just 18 balls, before Ryan Drake was introduced and he wrecked havoc in the Cambodia middle order.

Figures of three for 15 from his four overs only tell half the story, with stumps sent cartwheeling and high-fives abounding.

At 55 for five in the ninth, Japan were well on top, only for a mini revival to lift Cambodia to 125 for seven from their 20 overs as Godara Sharwan struck four maximums in his 36 not out.

In the chase, Japan made a steady start as Shirai-Patmore (23) and Yamamoto-Lake (32) put on 61 for the first wicket.

The drinks interval at 10 overs seemed to revitalise Cambodia as they roared back into the game with three wickets in the 11th over, but captain Kadowaki-Fleming (35) steadied things to take Japan close.

More wickets at the close made the match look a bit closer than it really was, and ultimately a win by three wickets with 11 balls to spare was a fantastic way to start the campaign.

Speaking after the game, Kadowaki-Fleming spoke of his pride about winning the opening game.

He said: “We really feel like part of Team Japan and it’s a great feeling to have this win. Hope we can have another strong performance in our next game.”

The team will next be facing Hong Kong on Sunday, October 1st, at 3:00 PM (Japan time) as they aim to advance to the quarterfinals.

One Short – JCL Round 11 Report

With a few rounds left in the 2023 season, it’s coming down to the wire for some teams, as Round 11 brought many exciting finishes.

After a disappointing loss in the previous round, the Tigers beat the Chiba Sharks in a tense battle.

On a gloomy damp day, Sharks opener Marcus Thurgate carried the Sharks’ batting innings making 47 in tough conditions. Unfortunately for the team, no one could support him as the Tigers’ ruthless bowling attack ripped through the batting order. Tigers captain Sabaorish Ravichandran led from the front with stats of five for 16 bowling the Sharks out for 105 in the 34th over.

Setting aside a couple of early wickets, the majority of the Tigers chase looked to be in full control as the team was 95 for three with Anil Kumar (42) and Ravichandran (31) setting the tone. Things all changed when Hamid Bacha was called back into the attack and forced a massive Tigers collapse and they soon found themselves 100 for nine. Thankfully for the Tigers, number 11 Abhijith Sasikumar hit two fours to bring home a one-wicket victory by the barest of margins.

The Wyverns narrowly missed out on a bonus point win over the Tokyo Falcons over the weekend.

Wyverns started off with a bang, taking a wicket in the first ball of the game as Kohei Kubota’s ball crashed into the Falcons opener’s stumps. The Falcons had good starts from Abhishek Anand (30) and Sanket Pandhari (33) but neither was able to capitalize as the tight bowling from the Wyverns shone through. All bowlers took a wicket each with the previously mentioned Kubota, taking the best figures of three for 21 to bowl out the Falcons in the 31st over for 144.

In the chase, the Wyverns were in a comfortable position around the halfway mark at 101 for three as JCL’s leading run scorer Wataru Miyauchi was settled at the crease. When he fell at 47, the tables turned losing four consecutive wickets for not many runs hurting their bonus point chances. Fortunately, the eighth-wicket partnership stopped the bleeding to finish the chase off in the 34th over and winning by 3 wickets.

The Tokyo Rangers took care of the Tokyo Wombats with an impressive batting display.

Winning the toss and electing to bat, the Wombats got off to the dream start with their two opening stalwarts Alex Shirai-Patmore (32) and Richie Bracefield (63) combining for a 110-run partnership. However, things quickly turned when they both fell together and the Rangers gathered some momentum. A very valuable innings by Ken Dobson (62) helped boost the Wombats to a respectable total of 222 for seven after 40.

The Rangers had no fear in the chase as they took to the Wombats’ bowlers in devastating fashion. All five batters in the chase struck at over 100 strike rate with Mohammad Rana (53*) and Muhammad Ghufran Mir (41) top-scoring. The chase was over in the 26th over securing the bonus point seven-wicket win and keeping within the top four.

Sano squeezed past a shorthanded Max squad to leapfrog them into first place.

Winning the toss and batting first, Sano started great with an opening run partnership of 68 between Kazumasa Hiratsuka (62) and Chihaya Arakawa (18). Middle-order batters Shotaro Hiratsuka (31) and Kohei Wakita (29) chipped after the openers fell to secure a 40 over total of 173 for eight. Max’s bowlers did a great job of restricting Sano to an even bigger score after their start, Masato Morita the best of the lot with figures of three for 21 off seven.

Chasing a niggly total, Max’s batters established themselves and made starts with four batters getting into the 20s. However, they could not capitalize due to the uneasy bowling attack Sano have. Four bowlers chipped in for wickets but it was the experienced legspinner Munir Ahmad with very economical stats of one for 24 off his eight overs that troubled Max. Munir also was involved in Max’s last wicket run out bowling out the team for 152 and winning by 24 runs.

The Alpha Quashers may be having a disappointing year, but after smashing the Paddy Foleys it  may bring some late-season momentum.

Although starting slow, things looked good early in Paddy Foleys’ batting innings, reaching 44 before their first loss. Despite that, after the first wicket fell, the Alpha Quashers’ bowlers turned it up a notch bowling the team out for 93 in the 22nd over. Three Quashers’ bowlers took a pair of wickets, including left-arm ortho Yash Wagh, with the outstanding stats of two for six off his four overs that was the biggest catalyst in the bowling innings.

The chase was over within a heartbeat as opener Srinivasanagaraju Pededa scored a rapid 42* striking at over 200 to bring it home for his team. The chase was completed in the ninth over losing a few wickets on the way. Regardless, a huge seven-wicket bonus point victory gives the Alpha Quashers their third win of the season.

One Short – JCL Round 9 & 10 Report

JCL Round 9

The Rising Stars who were dead last a few rounds ago have now suddenly shot up to mid-table after their big win over the Tokyo Wombats.

In a reduced 30-over match, the Rising Stars won the toss and elected to bowl. It was an excellent decision for Captain Murad Kazi as his team restricted the Wombats to 127 for eight. The standout bowler was Md Alagmir with figures of 3 for 20 off his six, but credit to the whole team as they also strung three runouts in the inning.

The Rising Stars were in some strife early but an excellent partnership between Captain Murad and first-innings star Alagmir both scored 29 to relieve stress back in the Rising Stars camp. In the end, the Rising Stars made it home with six overs to spare winning by four wickets making it their third win in a row.

Dhugal Bedingfield would go on to score his sixth JCL century to give his team a massive victory over the Paddy Foleys.

After being dropped on 10, Captain Bedingfield made the Paddy Foleys pay the price playing flawlessly from that point on. Bedingfield went on to score 122 at over a hundred strike rate to lead his side. Significant contributions from Japan National team players; Tsuyoshi Takada (46) and Muneeb Siddique (44) all chipped in to post a mammoth total of 316 for nine after 40.

The Sharks were also superb with the ball in the second innings led by Hamid Bacha, who knocked off the top order and the tail to claim an incredible six-wicket haul. Besides Wassem Javed scoring a gutsy 44, the Sharks’ bowlers were too much, bowling out Paddy Foleys for 128 on the 24th over. The bonus point 188-run win meant they have climbed up to fifth on the table, edging closer to the top four.

JCL Round 10

After another big win over the Alpha Quashers, Max has now become the number one team on the JCL standings.

After winning the toss and choosing to bowl, Max’s bowlers set the platform right from the start. All six of Max’s bowlers took a wicket, but young leg spinner Chathuranga Nipun stood above the rest. Nipun took five wickets at an economy under two off six overs, making the Alpha Quashers’ batters look silly. Max bowled out the Alpha Quashers in the 21st over for just 82.

As they have all season, Max did not waste any time in the chase. Openers Prabaoda Dassanayake (30) and Hanif Niazi (41*) scored at a rapid rate to chase Aplha Quashers’ total on the 10th over. The nine-wicket win was Max’s fifth bonus point win putting their team sitting top of the table with only a few rounds left.

Wataru Miyauchi scored his second century of the season as JCL’s leading run scorer leading his side to a tight thriller against the Paddy Foleys.

Batting first, the Wyverns’ openers Miyauchi and Shogo Kimura nearly put on a 100-run opening stand before Kimura fell to a running mishap. Despite another communication mix-up soon after, Miyauchi (111) kept making batting look easy, bringing up his 100 at over a run a ball. Raheel Kano added further support scoring 48 to finish with a total of 275/9 after 40 overs.

With rain approaching, the Paddy Foleys got off to a great start being 108 for one off the first 11 overs as Khawaja Salman took to the Wyverns openers.  Even when Salman fell at 57, the Paddy Foleys were still in a great position in terms of run rate, however, a late flurry of wickets came at the wrong time as rain stopped play for the remainder of the match. At 217 for six the Duckworth-Lewis system had the Wyverns just squeaking by with a one-run win as Noboru Asanaka had a great bowling performance with figures of three for 26 off eight.

Men in Blue had themselves a bonus point win on the back of a six-wicket performance by Naveen Negi.

Facing the Rising Stars, the Men in Blue bowled out the side for 177 in the 38th over. Rising Stars’ number three and four batters; R Shimul (55) and Md Alamgir (46) combined for a 93-run partnership as the team was looking good at 108 for two. But then Negi came back into the attack and ripped through the whole batting order taking six for 23 off seven overs to set up the chase.

Things were looking troublesome early for the Men in Blue, four down within the first nine overs. Fortunately, cool-headed innings from Saifuddin Raj gave his side much-needed runs scoring 54 at a healthy strike rate. That left Vishal Patel to come in and swing the bat scoring 31* off 15 to chase the total down in the 25th over, securing the Men In Blue a bonus point four-wicket win.

Sano had a big win over the Tokyo Rangers to leapfrog them in the standings.

Winning the toss and choosing to bowl in a reduced 35 ove game, Sano had the ideal start knocking off both openers for ducks. Sano did a great job all innings not letting any of the Rangers’ batters settle as only Mlinda Sanjaya (28) was the only batter to go on to score over 20 in the innings. Sano eventually bowled out the side for 119 in the 32nd over as Kazumasa stood out of the bowling collective with impressive figures of five overs, three for seven.

Sano’s chase began slow and worrying losing their openers to run-outs. Luckily for their side, Reo Sakurano-Thomas dug the team out of a hole scoring 60 and falling just two runs short of the total. Nonetheless, Sano took the five-wicket win and found themselves one point below the top of the table.

An incredible eighth-wicket partnership brought the Tokyo Falcons a huge upset win over the Tigers.

Falcons batted first after winning the toss and were in a bit of strife early at five for 66. Safraz Petkar quickly changed things when he came in hitting eight sixes to score a hasty 66. When Petkar fell, the Tigers were still looking on top but then a huge 164-run partnership between Kuldeep Bisht (82) and Abhi Telang (89) turned the tables. The pair combined for 20 sixes to get the Falcons to a very competitive total of 283 for eight after 40.

The Tigers started at a healthy run rate but regular wickets hurt them. Other than Anil Kumar who would go in to score 56, no one else was able to support and build partnerships. Credit to the Falcons bowlers as captain Bisht used all 10 available bowlers to keep the Tigers batters unsettled. Captain Bisht himself took the best figure of three for 44 as they managed to bowl out the tigers in the 38th over and win by 51 runs.

Japan Fourth in EAP Qualifier in Vanuatu

The Women’s Japan National Team ended their ICC Women’s T20 World Cup East Asia Pacific Qualifier 2023 campaign with a 21-run defeat at the hand of Vanuatu, which sent the ecstatic hosts through to the Global Qualifier as Champions of the EAP Region.

After winning the toss and choosing to bowl, Japan were tidy in the opening overs. Shimako Kato and Ahilya Chandel kept things tight and earned their reward when Velenta Langiatu was dismissed by Chandel in the fourth over.

Rachel Andrew, who finished at the leading run-scorer in the tournament, dominated the partnership of 63 with Nasimana Navaika (41 not out) as she struck three boundaries on her way to 43 from 46 balls before falling to Ayumi Fujikawa.

A total of 107 for two looked imposing but not impossible if Japan could build partnerships, and the team showed positive intent by promoting Haruna Iwasaki up the order to open. Iwasaki struck two boundaries and a clean six in her 17-ball stay that yielded 16 runs and gave Japan the start they needed, but nobody else was really able to get going as the Vanuatu bowlers continually took wickets to kill any sort of momentum from build up.

Japan would eventually finish 86 for nine from the 20 overs, meaning a fourth place finish after three defeats in a row. The tournament left the team with plenty of positives however, the highlight being the first win over Samoa in nine years and the batting of Erika Oda, who finished second in the tournament run scorers with 141 runs while Nonoha Yasumoto and Erika Toguchi-Quinn both had tournaments they can be proud of with the ball.

Coach Dean Ruhode said at the end: “We have all learned a lot and playing eight matches out here has been really beneficial. This is mostly a young group who are on an upward curve, so if we keep improving we can come back in two years knowing we will compete with the teams above us this time”.

The JCA would like to offer our thanks to the Vanuatu Cricket Association for their hospitality and congratulate them on their first ever women’s ICC tournament victory.

Indonesia too Strong for Japan

The Women’s Japan National Team suffered a second defeat in succession as Indonesia continued their excellent form in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup East Asia Pacific Qualifier 2023 in Vanuatu, winning their fourth match in a row.

Indonesia, ranked 20th in the world to Japan’s 55 and fresh from a Women’s Under 19 World Cup appearance at the start of the year, won the toss and chose to bowl, a decision that was immediately vindicated with early wickets as Japan were reduced to 25 for five in the 11th over.

Kurumi Ota top scored for the second match in a row with 20 from 27 deliveries, before being dismissed in the final over. Her efforts helped push Japan’s total to 66 for seven from the 20 overs, but given the way Indonesia had gone about their batting in the tournament thus far, it did not look enough.

The Japanese opening bowlers started brilliantly, keeping the Indonesia batters extremely quiet with just five runs coming from the opening four overs. Even at the halfway mark the game was still open, especially when Nanda Sakarini fell to Erika Toguchi-Quinn for 21.

As it transpired, that dismissal would be the turning point for Indonesia as Maria Wombaki came in and struck the ball with real power and authority, hitting two maximums in her 10-ball 26* to take Indonesia home by nine wickets with six overs to spare. She made batting look easy in a game where scoring runs had previously been hard work.

The win ends Japan’s hopes of making it to the World Cup Global Qualifier, but the team are going to have a say on who eventually wins the tournament as the final day awaits.

Vanuatu defeated Indonesia in the afternoon, which maintains their 100% record ahead of a double-header against Fiji in the morning and Japan in the afternoon. Indonesia and Papua New Guinea both go into the final day with one loss each and aim to win that contest in the hope that Japan can upset Vanuatu and open the door for either of them to qualify.

Match Schedule (Japan Time):

  • Friday 1 September – Cook Islands vs Japan, 07:30
  • Saturday 2 September – Japan vs Samoa, 11:30
  • Monday 4 September – Fiji vs Japan, 11:30
  • Tuesday 5 September – Papua New Guinea vs Japan, 07:30
  • Thursday 7 September – Indonesia vs Japan, 07:30
  • Friday 8 September – Vanuatu vs Japan, 11:30
