JCL Round 2: Wombats Top Order Too Good For Paddy’s

In a low-scoring week of fixtures in the Japan Cricket League Division One, the Tokyo Wombats and Chiba Sharks both made it two wins from two while the Tigers grabbed their first win in the top tier.

For the second match in succession the Wombats had a huge opening stand to aid their charge as Alex Patmore (77) this time combined with Mick Lay (57) to put on 165. What remained of the 215 target set by Paddy Foley’s in their first outing of the season was comfortably kocked off with seven wickets to spare. Paddy’s were restricted in their efforts to set a testing score thanks to Vikram Ragunathan (4/43) and Raskia Ethugala (5/31) sharing nine wickets between them.

In a tense affair at Tanuma the Chiba Sharks inflicted a painful defeat on Sano Cricket Club, defending a score of just 125. Eight miserly overs from Tsuyoshi Takada (2/19) and captain Paul Grant grabbing 4/24 meant Sano fell 30 runs short of a second win in a row and the Sharks earn a Bonus Point.

Much like the Sharks, the Tigers were also able to defend a low score in beating Wyverns Cricket Club by 25 runs. The bowling performance of the week came from big-name transfer Raheel Kano as he grabbed 5/12 in his seven overs, but the batters were unable to back that up, slumping to 119 all out.

The next round of matches will take place over the coming two weekends as the Sharks aim to make it three wins from three against the winless Wyverns, the Tigers will clash with Paddy Foleys and MAX are back in action against Sano following their bye this week.

In Division Two the first round is now complete as Adore took Sano 2nd XI apart by 122 runs. Bhutto Umair led the assault and repeated his century against the same opposition last season in crashing 144 from 116 balls, ably assisted by Shinpei Hagiwara (94 from 67). Adore kept Sano to just 171 in response, 49 from Mai Yanagida, on debut for Sano, the only resistance.

In the final match Paddy Foley’s 2nd XI were victorious against Tigers 2nd XI by a narrow margin of just eight runs. Defending 222 after runs from Fernando Wewalagamage (66) and Uddika Pradeep (44), it was the bowling of Pradeep (3/21) that enabled Paddys to fend off the Tigers despite 82* from Anil Kumar.

Round Two will also be played over the final two weekends of April.

JCL Round 1: Japan Cricket League Commences With Sharks Double

The Japan Cricket League Division One and Division Two began on the first weekend in April with the sakura in full bloom.

It was the Chiba Sharks who had the most productive weekend with both their 1st XI and 2nd XI returning to home victorious with wins over Max CC and Wyverns respectively.

In the 14-run win over defending Champions Max CC it was Dhugal Bedingfield who ruined Makoto Taniyama’s first match as captain with a 95-ball hundred and three wickets. He was ably supported by Paul Grant (4/41) and Varun Sanchetti (33).

Elsewhere in Division One the Tokyo Wombats prevailed by two wickets in a tight contest against Wyverns 1st XI. After a poor start, Tomoki Ota (51) and Kazuyuki Ogawa (39) steadied things enabling Wyverns to set a target of 210. The Wombats opening pair of Jarrad Shearer (67) and Alex Patmore (48) got their team off to a great start with 93 on the board before a late tumble of wickets set up a tight finale.

In the final match Sano CC registered a comfortable win over newly promoted Tigers, their 278/7 underpinned by a fine 111 from Rashid Rana and 64 from Chathura Aravinda while Tigers struggled to deal with the bowling of Prabath Sankalpa as his 6/15 helped dismiss the Tigers for just 125.

Division Two featured one match between the second XIs from Chiba and Wyverns, with Sharks two wins over the weekend in sharp contrast to Wyverns two defeats. Runs from Tsuyoshi Takada (39) helped the Sharks to a total of 221 in their 40 overs and ultimately a comfortable win by 44 runs as Wyverns were dismissed for 177 despite a battling 46* from Kensho Takahashi.

The next round of fixtures is due to be played in 16/17th April in Division One while Round One of Division Two will be completed this coming weekend.

National Team Trials Come To A Close

The newly re-named Sano International Cricket Ground hosted the National Trials for Japan Men’s and Women’s teams on the weekend of March 26/27. On each day approximately 41 males and 25 females attended and showcased their ability in practice matches, skill sessions and the brand new net facility.

Running the skills was a now frequent visitor to Japan, Cameron Tradell, who flew over from Australian especially for the weekend. In his fifth visit to Sano Cameron was able to work closely with all involved, giving valuable insights to their individual strengths and weaknesses while also running specific drills to improve teamwork and communication which is so vital to successful sides.?

On Sunday we were also fortunate to have the services of personal fitness trainer Shuichi Okawa, who travelled from Tochigi City to work with the players on their strength and conditioning. A massive thanks to both for their hard work and time.

The weekend began with glorious weather on Saturday, leaving a couple of people wishing they had remembered their suncream, and although it was slightly colder on the Sunday the conditions were generally excellent for cricket. The JCA would like to express our gratitude to all those who attended, especially those who travelled considerable distances, and hope that everyone was able to take something away from the two days.

The squads will be named in the near future and we wish great success to all who attended for the coming season.

International Cricket Ground to be built in Japan

On 22nd March 2016 the Sano City Council passed a Bill that would officially change the name of Tanuma High School to become the Sano International Cricket Ground. This is the first step in the city’s plans to build an International standard ground to attract the top teams from around the world.

The significance of this is considerable. For the first time Japan now has a dedicated cricketing venue built for purpose which no longer has to compete with other sports for usage.

The change, which was widely welcomed, continues the commitment made by the Sano City Council, especially Mayor Okabe Masahide, to turn Sano into the centre for Japanese Cricket with a playing facility that is able to attract teams from across the globe.

This has been a work in progress for some time, with several members of the Council making trips to the true Home of Cricket, Lord’s in St John’s Wood, London over the last few years. These trips have been an inspiration for the administrators who are keen to build on the already steady amount of sports tourism the city is generating through cricket.

Sano has already hosted the Pakistan Women’s A Team in 2013 as well as the six-team East Asia Pacific Trophy the following year. In 2016 the first ever Men’s East Asia Cup will be held featuring teams from China, Hong Kong and Korea and it is hoped that a large number of spectators will attend the four-day tournament in the first week of November.

Along with the International Cricket Ground, Sano has four other cricket pitches and the playing numbers are steadily increasing. The Junior U15 Team are currently National Champions and the Senior Men’s Team finished top of the Japan Cricket League Division One Table before losing out in the Semi-Finals last year.

This year the Sano International Cricket Ground is expected to host approximately 180 games of cricket. The ground currently has three lanes of turf pitches and an indoor gym. A three lane practice net facility with high quality flood lights is also under construction and is planned to be completed by the end of March. The next steps for the City Council are to purchase a roller and improve the toilet facilities.

Future plans include a complete renewal of the playing fields which will host an ODI standard oval and a second oval meeting the Women’s ODI standards. The ground will also have a newly built pavilion and an indoor training centre. The Japan Cricket Association is excited about the plans and looks forward to future developments.

East Asia Cup Tournament organised between China, Hong Kong, Japan and Korea

The Cricket Associations of China, Hong Kong, Japan and Korea have entered into an agreement to contest a biennial East Asia Cup Competition.

Japan will host the first Men’s tournament in Sano, the home of Japanese Cricket from 3-6 November 2016 where the format will be Twenty20.

The inaugural Men’s competition will be for the representative teams of each country, excluding Hong Kong who will send their all-Chinese Dragons side.

The purpose of the East Asia Cup is to increase the opportunities for the national teams in the region, none of whom feature in the ICC World Cricket League.

CEO of the Japan Cricket Association Naoki Miyaji said: “We are really excited about formalising this agreement between the four countries.

“We are all close by so travel will be simple and all the four teams will be at a similar standard in both the men’s and women’s competitions.”

The 2017 edition of the tournament will be for the full women’s teams and is due to be hosted by Hong Kong. In both formats the teams will all play each other in a round robin before a 3rd place playoff and final.

In every tournament there will be recognition for the best performing batsman and bowler as well as a “Most Valuable Player” award.

Hosting will be shared around the region with each team hosting one tournament in a four-year cycle. It is hoped this will increase interest in the sport as well as raise standards among the participating countries.

The tournament schedule for the next four years is as follows:

Host Category
2016 Japan Men
2017 Hong Kong Women
2018 China Men
2019 Korea Women
