Spinners See Japan Home Against Thailand

The Japanese spinners played a key role, alongside some stunning fielding, as Thailand were beaten by 61-runs in Sano on day two of the Men’s Sano International Tri Series.

Having won the toss and opted to bat Japan were restricted to 110 for nine by some accurate Thai bowling, particularly left-arm spinner Nopphon Senamontree who took three for 19 from his four overs.

However, spinners accounted for six of the first eight wickets to fall as five different bowlers chipped in with wickets.

It was seam that started things off, as Shoma Sugaya-Slater made the breakthrough in his first over on debut, thanks to a stunning run-and-dive from Benjamin Ito-Davis.

Ito-Davis then hit the stumps directly to earn a run-out in the next over before Declan Suzuki (on as Ito-Davis got patched up following his acrobatics in the field) took another sharp catch to dismiss captain Austin Lazarus.

The procession continued as Japan took all ten Thai wickets for just 49 runs inside 15 overs to ultimately earn a comfortable win.

Sabaorish Ravichandran earned the MVP award after top scoring with 24 (27) and collecting two for 11 in his three overs with the ball.

Japan play Cook Islands tomorrow afternoon, following a repeat of the tournament’s first match in the morning as Thailand look for their first win.

JPL X Day 3 Report | East Kanto Sunrisers Retain JPL Title

The East Kanto Sunrisers successfully defended their Japan Premier League crown, winning the final by 79 runs against the Kansai Chargers at SICG.

Needing a big victory in the final round robin match and the other morning match to go their way to avoid a last-place finish, Mitchell Jamieson delivered for the Sunrisers, belting 84* from just 33 balls in morning action against the South Kanto Super Kings.

In a reduced match of 11-overs per side, a total of 179 for five proved far too much for the Super Kings, who could only manage 114 for six in reply, meaning a 65-run win for the Sunrisers.

That means that with a Chargers win over West Kanto Hurricanes on SICG One, the Sunrisers finished second on Net Run Rate and it was Jamieson again who stepped up in the final, making a calm half-century in slow batting conditions and taking five catches against the Chargers as the Sunrisers lifted the trophy.

The defending champions made 139 in the first innings, and the dismissal of Jack Wood, taken by Jamieson in the deep, began the rot as the Chargers fell for just 60.

Kansai’s counter came through wicket-keeper/batter Alex Shirai-Patmore (19), though the Sunrisers strangled their opponents first with the pace of Shoma Slater (two for seven), before a spate of wickets through spin.

Ibrahim Takahashi was at his best with the ball, finishing with two for 17 with his off-spin alongside the impressive Ben Ito-Davis, (one for 17) and Sanam Luitel who sped up the inevitable victory with a three-wicket haul.

It means the Sunrisers have now had seven successive years in the top two and this victory takes them past the South Kanto Super Kings and onto four titles. The skipper Kendel Kadowaki-Fleming played his part on the final day, making 45 (30) in the final and 53 (22) in the final round robin to stamp his mark on the tournament.

It was a batting blitz SICG One in the morning, with Josh Brown’s emphatic century for the Hurricanes outdone by Kansai’s Jack Wood as the Chargers chased down 171 with nine wickets and five balls to spare in a contest for the ages.

Wood belted 127* off just 67 balls to complete the chase on the first ball of the final over, to deny the Hurricanes an appearance in the afternoon final. The knock is the highest individual score in the tournament’s history, usurping Brown’s effort in 2024.

In the third-place play-off, the Hurricanes found an unlikely hero with the ball in wicket-keeper Wataru Miyauchi, who took bowling responsibilities into his own hands, claiming Four wickets for just six runs to bowl North Kanto Lions out for just 77 in a 37-run win.

Left-hander Jake Kusuda-Nairn had earlier resurrected West Kanto’s innings, making 42 (35) from No.9 to take the team from 44 for seven to 114 all out.

The individual accolades were handed out in the post-tournament presentation as follows:

  • Best U23 Player: Charlie Hara-Hinze (83 runs, 5 wickets)
  • Best Batter: Jack Wood (159 runs)
  • Best Bowler: Abdul Samad (8 wickets)
  • MVP: Mitchell Jamieson (156 runs and 7 catches)

Highlights:

Match Summaries:

  • West Kanto Hurricanes, 170/3 (Brown 103, L.Yamamoto-Lake 32), lost to Kansai Chargers, 174/1 (Wood 127*) by 9 wickets
  • East Kanto Sunrisers, 179/5 (Jamieson 84*, K.Kadowaki-Fleming 53, Anand 33, Parmar 4/26) beat South Kanto Super Kings, 114/6) by 65 runs)
  • Final: Kansai Chargers, 60/10 (Luitel 3/5), lost to East Kanto Sunrisers, 139/6 (K.Kadowaki-Fleming 45, Jamieson 51) by 79 runs
  • 3rd Place: West Kanto Hurricanes, 114/10 (Kusuda-Nairn 42, Ayukai 3/18) beat North Kanto Lions, 77/10 (Miyauchi 4/6) by 37 runs

JPL X Day 2 Report | Kansai Charge, Hurricanes Hot

Kansai Chargers enter day three of the Japan Premier League undefeated thanks to a confident nine-wicket win over the South Kanto Super Kings, while the West Kanto Hurricanes continue their surge with back-to-back wins in Sunday action.

After the Super Kings won the toss and asked them to bowl, the Chargers responded through the left-arm orthodox of Abdul Samad, who claimed a hat-trick in an outing of four for 14.

Samad’s scalp of Sabaorish Ravichandran broke the back of South Kanto’s innings, with the pace of U19 World Cup Qualifier hero Kai Wall (two for 14 from three overs) sinking the Super Kings to 93 all out.

Openers Jack Wood (25) and Alex Shirai-Patmore (35*) took the sting out of the chase through a partnership of 71, with Pankaj Chand (19*) backing the pair up to chase down the target inside 18 overs with nine wickets to spare.

It was a final-over thriller on SICG No.2 for the Hurricanes’ morning win, with U19 international teammates Hugo Tani-Kelly and Ryuki Ozeki sneaking West Kanto Hurricanes home in a 19-run stand.

Tani-Kelly (24*) walked out with his team 29 for five in a chase of 86, and hit the winning boundary off the second ball of the last over to win by two wickets.

Earlier, Kazuma Kato-Stafford and Josh Brown claimed a pair of wickets each in West Kanto’s effort, with no North Kanto Lion reaching 20.

The Hurricanes backed up the effort with another tense win in the afternoon, defending 108 against a strong Super Kings batting outfit.

Tani-Kelly again came to the Hurricanes’ rescue, making 22 (27) with the lower order, which was supported by an explosive Souta Wada, who struck three successive sixes, and late runs from Kazuma Kato-Stafford (14) and Ryan Drake (10*).

Drake delivered with the ball in the Hurricanes’ defence along with Kato-Stafford, as the pair combined for seven wickets to bowl the Super Kings out for 62.

Kato-Stafford beat Marcus Thurgate (1) and Kiefer Yamamoto-Lake (0), before Drake found Nihar Parmar’s outside edge (11) and dismissed key men Hara-Hinze (16) and Ravichandran (4) to leave the Super Kings stranded at 51 for six.

Kato-Stafford tied up the victory with his third, to finish with three for 12 as the Hurricanes won by 46 runs.

The North Kanto Lions came out fighting after injuries and absentees threatened to derail their campaign completely, and instead booked their spot in the 3rd vs 4th play-off with an afternoon victory over the East Kanto Sunrisers by eight wickets, in large part thanks to marquee man James Bazley on SICG One.

Bazley claimed two Powerplay wickets, returning to finish with three for 18, before closing out the chase of 95 with an unbeaten 26* as the Lions finally recorded a win.

The Hurricanes meet the Chargers in the morning round robin action, with the Super Kings taking on the Sunrisers.

The morning action completes the round robin phase, with first taking on second on SICG One in the final, with a third-place playoff in the afternoon.

Highlights:

Match Summaries:

  • South Kanto Super Kings, 93/10 (Samad 4/14), lost to Kansai Chargers, 94/1 (Shirai-Patmore 35*) by 9 wickets
  • North Kanto Lions, 85/8, lost to West Kanto Hurricanes, 86/8 (Chandima 3/24, A.Thurgate 3/18) by 2 wickets
  • West Kanto Hurricanes, 108/10 (Kubota 3/26), beat South Kanto Super Kings, 62/10 (Kato-Stafford 3/12, Drake 4/8), by 46 runs
  • East Kanto Sunrisers, 94/10 (Bazley 3/18, Natarajan 3/16), lost to North Kanto Lions, 96/2 by 8 wickets

JPL X Day 1 Report | Chargers Top, Super Kings Strong

Sabaorish Ravichandran’s South Kanto Super Kings made an early statement on day one of the Japan Premier League, chasing down North Kanto’s 145 inside 16 overs with six wickets to spare.

The skipper showed control in the Super Kings’ chase, making an unbeaten fifty, with partner Charlie Hara-Hinze continuing his dream week, picking up where he left off at the U19 Cricket World Cup Qualifier with a 36-ball 58, only run out when Ravichandran jetted off for the winning run.

Hara-Hinze had earlier suffocated the Lions with his left-arm orthodox, removing two of the top three of North Kanto and finishing with three for 25 off his four overs. In spite of the defeat, Lions all-rounder Kazumasa Hiratsuka produced a spellbinding knock, blasting 71 not out from just 40 balls in a valiant counter attack.

It was a day that highlighted an impressive level of depth across the playing stocks at the tournament, with draft pick 41 Dost Muhammad (one for 22) of the Super Kings stunning Sano with a sharp delivery to undo Star Player James Bazley.

On SICG Two a victory over defending champions East Kanto Sunrisers to go with shared points from a morning no-result has put the Kansai Chargers top of the table.

Having watched afternoon opponents East Kanto Sunrisers claim an opening victory over West Kanto Hurricanes in a 15-over affair on SICG One, Declan Suzuki-McComb’s side stifled the Sunrisers top order in a defence of 134 to claim Saturday bragging rights.

The skipper top scored in his side’s batting effort (35), before the Chargers bowling group kept a powerful top five at bay, eventually bowling out the Sunrisers for 108 to win by 26 runs.

In the completed morning fixture, it was Ben Ito-Davis who resurrected East Kanto Sunrisers’ innings alongside senior international mainstay Ibrahim Takahashi (39* off 25 balls), with the pair putting on an unbeaten stand of 99 in just 7.4 overs to go from 39/4 to 138/4 as the truncated innings came to a close.

Ito-Davis’ 55* off 30 balls included four sixes, and the all-rounder went on to take three for seven in three overs to restrict West Kanto Hurricanes to just 111.

Quick-bowling newcomer Shoma Slater showed his wares with a two-wicket haul in the 27-run victory, also claiming Kansai’s Star Player Jack Wood in their afternoon defeat.

Rain on Friday meant the No.2 ground was not ready for the morning fixture between the Chargers and North Kanto Lions, though the tireless efforts from groundsman Mahesh Bopage, staff and competition players yielded three completed matches, on a day where a complete washout looked likely.

Afternoon match winners Kansai and South Kanto meet on ground No.1 in Sunday morning action, with North Kanto and West Kanto hunting for their first victories on No.2.

East Kanto take on North Kanto in the afternoon on No.1, while West Kanto take on South Kanto on No.2

Highlights:

Match Summaries:

  • East Kanto Sunrisers, 138/4 (Ito-Davis 55*, Takahashi 39*), beat West Kanto Hurricanes, 111/10 (Ito-Davis 3/7) by 27 runs.
  • Kansai Chargers vs North Kanto Lions: Match Abandoned
  • South Kanto Super Kings, 146/4 (Hara-Hinze 58, Ravichandran 57*) beat North Kanto Lions, 145/6 (Hiratsuka 71*, Hara-Hinze 3/25), by 6 wickets.

Japan Defeat Fiji and Qualify for Under 19 World Cup!

The Men’s Japan Under 19 National Team qualified for the Under 19 Cricket World Cup for the second time in their history after another resounding win at the Sano International Cricket Ground.

Japan knew a repeat of their victory earlier in the tournament would secure qualification and stand in captain Kazuma Kato-Stafford had no hesitation in choosing to bat upon winning the toss.

With Nikhil Pol absent through injury, the new opening pair of Nihar Parmar (36) and Hugo Tani-Kelly (38) moved serenely to 78 before Parmar was bowled in the 15th over.

A mini collapse followed as Japan lost four wickets for 16 runs and while Charlie Hara-Hinze (21) and Kazuma Kato-Stafford (25) battled, Fiji were able to bowl the hosts all out for 167 after 43 overs with Joeli Moala taking three for 33.

Fiji’s World Cup dream was still alive at the turn and they knew that a successful chase, coupled with a win over Papua New Guinea in their final match tomorrow, would see them travel to Africa next year instead of Japan.

With so much on the line it was no surprise that there was an explosion of emotion with every wicket that fell. For the third time in four games it was seam that made the breakthrough as Kato-Stafford knocked the stumps down at the end of the sixth over.

From then on it quickly became a procession with the usual suspects to the fore. Throughout the tournament the spin trio of Hugo Tani-Kelly, Nihar Parmar and especially Charlie Hara-Hinze have led the way for Japan, and they accounted for another eight wickets between them today.

There was one for Tani-Kelly, three without conceding a run for Nihar Parmar, and another four wicket haul for Charlie Hara-Hinze as Fiji had no answers to the accurary as well as sone sublime catching.

Hara-Hinze took a stunning catch to give Parmar his first as top scorer Manav Narayan was dismissed for 20, only for Kaisei Kobayashi-Doggett to take an even better one close in as Parmar ran riot towards the end.

In the end Fiji were dismissed for just 52 in 20.5 overs as Japan wrapped up the win by 115 runs to book their place at the World Cup in Namibia and Zimbabwe in early 2026.

Japan Defeat PNG to Maintain 100% Record

Charlie Hara-Hinze continued his fine form as the Men’s Japan Under 19 National Team recorded their third win in a row at the ICC Men’s U19 WC EAP Division One 2025.

After winning the toss and choosing to bat, the hosts needed to rely on their batting depth after several batters got in but could not convert their starts.

Captain Nikhil Pol made 40 before becoming the first of three victims for Vagi Vani (three for 27), while Hara-Hinze made a quickfire 30 before edging behind as PNG had Japan in trouble at 96 for five in the 27th over.

PNG kept chipping away and with Japan 131 for seven in the 41st over there was some concern they could post a below par score, however Skyler Nakayama-Cook (30*) and Ryuki Ozeki (20*) put on an unbroken 48-run partnership, the highest of the innings, to steer the team to 179 for seven at the halfway mark.

The PNG openers were steady to begin with, but the introduction of spin was their undoing as Hugo Tani-Kelly wrecked havoc among their top order.

The initial breakthrough came as Hara-Hinze clean bowled the PNG captain in the 7th over, but the game turned quickly in the 12th over as Tani-Kelly grabbed three wickets in four balls to leave PNG reeling.

Tani-Kelly would eventually finish with four for 21, while Hara-Hinze ended another good day with three for 19, each bowling their allotted ten overs.

Japan eventually polished off the tail, and despite an obdurate 26 not out from 89 balls from Aluend Boge, Japan wrapped up the win by 71 runs with more than ten overs to spare.

Japan will play their final match of the tournament tomorrow, knowing that a win against Fiji will secure World Cup qualification for the first time since 2019.

Japan Defeat Fiji in World Cup Qualifier

Japan completed a routine win over Fiji on Day Two of the ICC Men’s U19 WC EAP Division One 2025.

After a second delay in successive days the match was reduced for 40 overs and after the toss was finally taken Fiji called correctly and chose to bat first.

As in the previous day Kazuma Kato-Stafford made an early breakthrough but it was the spinners who did the most damage.

Just four Japanese bowlers were used and the Fiji batters had no answers to the guile of Charlie Hara-Hinze (five for 20), and Nihar Parmar (four for 19) as Japan took all ten wickets for just 54 runs in 18.3 overs.

Fiji were boisterous and energetic in the field and were able to pick up four wickets of their own before Hara-Hinze made batting look easier than anyone else on the day with a quickfire 23* from 14 balls to give Japan the win by six wickets.
