JCL Round Two Report: Sharks 100% Record Takes Them Top

After the drama of Round One, the second installment of the Japan Cricket League was always likely to revert to type, but that’s not to say there were not a few surprises along the way.

Bedingfield (left) and Kimura both hit 80s

The Chiba Sharks are the early pace-setters after a see-saw match against Wyverns at the SICG. Batting first there were more runs for skipper Dhugal Bedingfield, his 82 laying the foundation for a total of 284/9. He was supported superbly by Tsuyoshi Takada who made a run-a-ball 53 in a stand of 116 for the 4th wicket.

Nozomi Tomizawa, up against his old side, made early inroads and finished with 4/49, his best return in three years and leaves him with more JCL wickets in two matches than he managed in all of the 2018 season for the Sharks.

It was then the turn of the Sharks bowlers, Muneeb Siddique (3/37) and Rui Matsumura (2/24) to run through the Wyverns top order. At 19/4 the game looked over, before an entertaining stand of 127 between Tomizawa (37 – he now has more runs in a season after two matches than he ever managed for the Sharks), and Shogo Kimura. The former baseballer smashed 80 and never looked like getting out, but the required rate of ten an over proved too much as Sharks took the required wickets to win by 78-runs and go top.

Quashers – bouncing back

AQCC and the Tigers had contrasting fortunes in Round One, so the smart money was on Tigers keeping up the pressure at the top. The Quashers had other ideas however, as spin twins Devendra Dhaka (3/27) and Karthik Vellingiri (3/19) ran through the batting and only Ankit Thakur with 57 provided any real resistance.

A target of 154 looked achievable, but after a rare failure with the bat Sabaorish Ravichandran decided to open the bowling and was in the action right away. His 4/21 had AQCC stuttering at 109/7 after contributions from Nandha Rangasamy (35) Vijay Sundaram (37). An 8th wicket stand of 47* from Raman Tanwar (18*) and Gurman Singh (24*) took the Quashers home however, with just eight balls to spare for a three wicket win.

Kobayashi – on form

After their surprising tie in Round One, MAX CC came back firing this time out. Batting first against Tokyo Falcons Amigo Kobayashi again led from the front with 80 that included four 6s, while Hanif Khan was equally aggressive in his 45. Further runs from Supun Nawarathna (41) and Makoto Taniyama (41) lifted the Champions to an imposing 288/9.

Ankur Mehrotra did his best in the chase, his 37 providing some substance to the Falcons innings before they were eventually rolled over for 138, Hanif Khan picking up 3/3 in a convincing win by 150-runs.

In the final match of the Round the Men in Blue followed up their promising start in the tie against MAX by brushing aside Tokyo Wombats. Batting first the Wombats were indebted as ever to Alex Patmore, who anchored the innings with 78 before being 9th out and becoming the third victim of Sanket Pandari (3/41). A club record 9th wicket stand of 28, including a club record score for a number 11 of 13 by Solaiman Haque lifted Wombats to 187 all out and at least gave them something to cheer.

MIB – Unbeaten

The chase was over in double quick time as Abhishek Telang (62) and Pandari (64*) put on a 96-run partnership in 89-balls to break the back of the target before Sarfraz Petkar hit 24* from eight deliveries to win the match by seven wickets.

That bonus point win for MIB lifts then into the heady heights of second, while the Wombats are rooted to the foot of the table.

There is a short break until after Golden Week, when Division One will return on 11th/12th of May.

Cricket Victoria Placements to Japan Confirmed for 2019

As part of the ongoing partnership between the Japan Cricket Association and Cricket Victoria, two placements have been confirmed to visit in 2019.

Both Simon Dart (April 23rd – May 13th) and Dom McGlinchey (May 19th – Jun 9th) will work with the JCA for three weeks each covering a variety of roles. While Simon will help the Under 19 side prepare for the World Cup Qualifying tournament in Sano as well as training the Japan Men’s Team, Dom will focus on community cricket in both Sano and Akishima, while also helping out during the Under 19 tournament.

After learning he would be coming to Japan Simon said: “Japan is a country, l have never played or coached in so I am very much looking forward to embracing the culture, building strong relationships and meeting new people”.

Dom, who has played for Australia Under 19s, said: “The concept of being involved with an ICC East Asia Pacific global partnership motivates me and reminds me of the international reach the game has”.

The JCA is excited to welcome both men to Japan and wishes to extend our continued thanks to Rohan O’Neill and his team at Cricket Victoria for enabling this partnership to continue thriving.

JCL Round One Report: Runs Galore on Opening Weekend

The early season in Japan is all about the fast outfields, and the new Sano International Cricket Ground is proving as rapid as the old river grounds.

Opening weekend had some thrilling matches and proves, just as the One Short team expected, that the 2019 season promises to be completely bonkers.

While we could start with either of the matches that included centuries, it is rare that a One Short reporter gets to witness a tie; that’s right, a tie! And not the type you wear around your neck…

MAX CC; Hard to Beat

Defending Champions MAX CC were up against newly promoted Men in Blue, long time winners of the East Kanto Japan Cup competition but now making their way in the thin air of JCL Division One.

Batting first the MIB had a number of partnerships but were indebted to Gurdeep Dua (55 off 49), who struck five maximums on his way to a maiden Division One half century before having his stumps splattered by new MAX signing Kazumasa Takhashi, who was the pick of the bowlers with 3/36.

A total of 218 all out looked competitive at the break, and a lot less so when Hanif Khan (30) and Amigo Kobayashi (55) were going about their business at the top of the order. However Hitesh Akabari’s introduction sparked a collapse of seven wickets for 35 runs as he claimed 4/41 leaving MAX 183/9 and looking dead and buried.

A remarkable last wicket stand of 35 between stalwart Takuro Hagihara (19) and Ankit Panwar (32*) took MAX level with four balls remaining, before Vikash Ranjan sparked wild celebrations by forcing Hagihara to go arial and be caught to secure the tie.

If that match was remarkable, then there were even more runs being scored next door on SICG 1 as the Tokyo Wombats and Tigers CC served up a feast.

Rahul Koul’s 105* was a career best

Like MIB, the Wombats won the toss and batted with Alex Patmore (71) and Richie Bracefield (96) putting on an outstanding opening partnership of 172. A typically boisterous 54 from Dan Mee took the Wombats to 247/6 with just Ranjith Mouli (3/24) having anything to celebrate for the Tigers.

Last year Wombats twice passed 200 only to still end up on the losing side, but they were confident going into the second innings only to have their hopes melted by a glorious career best 105* by Rahul Koul, which eclipsed his previous JCL best of 63 and will leave him smiling until the season ends.

That century, which included six sixes, led the Tigers to a comfortable win by eight wickets, inside 29 overs and left everyone wondering what they might of posted had they batted first. Captain Sabaorish Ravichandran (40*) was surprisingly critical of his team afterwards, saying they were rusty in the field and demanding higher standards if they are to go all the way this year. If they bat like this, they just might.

Rui Matsumura grabs a one-handed boundary catch, and takes five-fer

Dhugal Bedingfield LOVES opening weekend. Coming into the Chiba Sharks match against promoted Division Two Champions Tokyo Falcons all you could hear from the Sharks Captain was how he’d scored hundreds on the opening weekend of each of the last two seasons so was bound to do it again…few believed he actually would.

Batting first the Falcons made a decent start to life in Division One as Kuldeep Bisht gave the innings some backbone with a sparkling 73 from 46 balls, but the star of the innings was Chiba Sharks opening bowler Rui Matsumura. The Japan International bagged a career best 5/42 plus two catches, one an absolute screamer on the boundary, to dismiss Falcons for a competitive 219, or so it looked.

Bedingfield and Velusamy see Sharks home

Bedingfield (124*) and young upstart Neel Date (28) came out to open and a 106-run opening stand set the Sharks on their way. The old warhorse led the charge, bringing up his third Sakura Century to much bat kissing and hugging with his partner Pavethy Velusamy, who finished the game off with a bang to bring up his own half century and finish 52* inside 32 overs to earn a bonus point win by nine wickets for the title hopefuls.

Nobody knows quite what to expect from Wyverns this year, and if this performance is anything to go by they are likely to keep teams guessing throughout the season. Batting first against Alpha Quashers, a solid opening stand of 72 between Wataru Miyauchi (41) and Raheel Kano (37) set them on the way to a decent score, before Quashers roared back with four wickets for 19 runs to bring themselves back into the contest.

Nozomi Tomizawa (39) was signed from the Chiba Sharks in the off season, and his arrival led to a recovery as he added 76 for the fifth wicket with Bebe Miyaji (37), before a second collapse of six wickets for 18 left Wyverns all out for 186; Devendra Dhaka the pick of the bowlers for AQCC with 3/16 with his left-arm grenades.

Wyverns, looking sharp in their new uniforms

Wyverns then made a terrific start with the ball as Tomizawa (3/15) ripped out the Quashers top order, bowling beautifully in tandem with Kohei Kubota (2/28). At 83/8 it looked like Wyverns had the game won, only for Nikhil Chhajed to make a mockery of his batting position of number eight with a rampaging 62 from 35 deliveries.

Ably supported by Gurman Singh (25) in a 63-run stand, it looked like the Quashers might sneak home, but a Miyaji floater coaxed a mistake out of Singh and Kubota uprooted Chhajed’s stumps to give Wyverns a win by 12-runs.

That wraps up a longer report than usual, purely because of the outstanding performances and breathtaking matches of the opening weekend. Let’s hope the contests remain this good for the season.
