Women’s East Asia Cup Agreement Confirmed

The cricket associations of China, Hong Kong, Japan, and South Korea have signed a new Memorandum of Understanding to hold a Women’s East Asia Cup every year for the next four years.

This is the first time that separate agreements have been made for the Men’s and Women’s events, showing that the desire to drive forward opportunities for the female cricketers in the region is right at the forefront of all four members plans.

Hong Kong is due to host the 2021 event, with Japan granted the 2022 tournament before China and South Korea hold the 2023 and 2024 editions respectively.

Head of Cricket operations for the Japan Cricket Association Alan Curr said: “With so much uncertainty around international travel and what possibilities there might be for playing cricket in the future, we felt it was vital to make a long-term commitment to the East Asia Cup, which is a key part of our national squads’ strategy. We are delighted that our partners felt the same and look forward to doing all we can to make these events happen.”

The Women’s East Asia Cup was last held in South Korea in 2019 where China was victorious for the second time after they also won the inaugural event in 2015. Hong Kong won the only other Women’s edition in 2017.

The last Men’s East Asia Cup was held in 2018 in Hong Kong, where Japan won their first title, with Korea winning the only other tournament in 2016. With all four members having at least one title across Men’s and Women’s tournaments the competitiveness is clear. All matches will now have full T20 International status as well, meaning they will have a direct impact on the participating members international ranking.

Talks are ongoing around the Men’s Competition with an announcement expected in due course.

State of Emergency: Extended (Update 10th May)

The government announcement that the State of Emergency in Tokyo and the greater Osaka area is extended until May 31st means that we must also extend our own halt on domestic cricket.

With the news that Chiba, Kanagawa and Saitama are now also under the quasi-state of emergency restrictions it is no longer feasible for club cricket to continue in any capacity in these areas.

We will continue to work with committees to rearrange fixtures where possible, but with uncertainty around when the season can restart we ask for patience and understanding if some matches do have to be cancelled.

We urge all members of the cricket community to follow the necessary precautions and that when we are able to restart cricket that all participants remain extremely vigilant.

We would also like to send out our support to our south Asian communities as the situation worsens across a number of countries in the region and we hope that families and friends are staying safe.

Please stay safe and thank you all for your patience and understanding.

Cricket Blast Returns to Edogawa

After missing the whole of 2020, Cricket Blast returned to the Edogawa riverside on April 10th with a host of eager children taking part in a series of matches.

Almost 50 participants came together to compete for the Cricket Blast Kanto Cup. A number of prominent clubs in Japan were featured with Men In Blue, Tokyo Falcon, Tokyo Rangers all represented, while the Kawasaki Knight Riders and Tokyo Titans appeared at a formal Cricket Blast event for the first time.

In what was a day full of loud cheering and encouragement, all the teams showed the fun nature of cricket at junior level and everyone had something to celebrate.

After the round matches, Tokyo Rangers and Tokyo Titans A were both undefeated and thus earned their spot in the final. A closely fought contest saw Tokyo Rangers (50 runs) claim the Cup ahead of the Titans (32).

A big thank you to all the parent supporters and volunteers who helped with scoring, umpiring and running of the event on the day! We hope to have a similarly successful competition again on May 15.

JCL Round Two: Teams Bounce Back to Prove Unpredictability

“It was all wrapped up after Round One” they said! Oh how wrong they were as three of the five defeated teams in the first round of matches bounced back to record impressive wins in Round Two, with another coming mighty close.

In the featured Match of the Round the Chiba Sharks showed that they are still a force with a crushing win over 2020 Runners Up Alpha Quashers Yokohama that was built on the all-round excellence of Ibrahim Takahashi.

Batting first the Sharks looked on the hook at 134/6 as wickets tumbled to Gurman Singh (3/25) and Raman Tanwar (2/40), Tanmoy Mookherjee standing up with his 48, before Takahashi celebrated his call up to the Japan Men’s Squad with a fine half century. He was 12* when the sixth wicket fell, and was last out for 57 having carried the Sharks to 206 all out.

As if that wasn’t enough, Takahashi then opened the bowling and delivered his allocated eight overs straight, taking 3/26 in the process. This was in partnership with the outstanding Rui Matsumura, whose swing the Quashers just could not handle. After nine overs the Sharks had five Quashers wickets for just 23 runs and the chase looked doomed.

It was Singh who gave the contest some respectability with 71 from 64 deliveries, which did just enough to deny the Sharks a bonus point, before becoming one of three victims for the part-time off spin of Dhugal Bedingfield (3/22) as the captain wrapped up an impressive 59-run win for his team.

Another team often quick to be written off is the Tokyo Wombats, but with Alex Patmore aging like a Scottish Whisky it would be foolish to dismiss them as a threat this season. Against Men in Blue it looked like they could be up against it as 53 from Anurag Bharadwaj took the visitors to 98/1 after 18 overs, only for nine wickets to tumble for just 57 runs in the next 13.3 overs.

Leading the charge, and the Division One wickets table, was Chelsea Moscript; her leggies bamboozling the Men in Blue to the tune of 4/17 in 7.3 overs as she worked in perfect tandem with Kavin Jinasena who collected 4/46 himself as he showed off his new athleticism.

Then it came to Patmore, fresh off his hundred in Round One. The MIB bowling simply could not contain him and partner in crime Richie Bracefield. The pair put on 90 for the first wicket before the latter departed for 42, but Patmore steered his team home expertly to finish 69* to win with nine wickets to spare and earn a valuable bonus point to boot.

The third team to bounce back was the Tokyo Falcons, although theirs was a slightly more routine performance against the Rising Stars. After five Falcons bowlers picked up wickets to dismiss the guys in green for just 156, Ankur Mehotra made 63 as the Falcons won by six wickets and also earned a bonus point.

MAX CC and Tigers CC remain unbeaten, although MAX were made to work for it by Wyverns who could feel a little unlucky to lose after an impressive chase.

Batting first MAX scored 275/8 in their 40 overs, Supun Nawarathna making a rapid 75, including five sixes, while Masaomi Kobayashi anchored the innings with a sublime 87 before holing out to long-on in the penultimate over.

Wyverns chased hard with Raheel Kano (66), Masaki Kawashima (72*) and Wataru Miayuchi (45) all looking like they could get them home, but the task proved just beyond them in the end as they finished 262/5, an agonising 13 runs short.

There were no such scares for the Tigers as Anuraj Singh played the knock of the round with an excellent 111* against Sano CC, ably supported by 48 from Anil Kumar, which took Tigers to 245/5. The Tigers bowlers then smothered Sano; Piyush Kumbhare returned to haunt his old club with 4/16 as they bowled Sano out for just 115 to win by a huge 130 runs, narrowly missing out on a bonus point due to some obdurate batting by the Sano lower order.

Which brings us to the end of April and time to announce the very first One Short Player of the Month. Introduced for no reason other than we like to pump the tyres of those who do well, and although we have no actual award to hand over we are sure that a nice picture on social media will mean plenty to all recipients of this award across the season. It’s not just JCL Division One we will be looking at, but matches across all competitions.

So without further ado, take a bow Alex Patmore, who with one century and one half century in his first two outings, plus four catches and a stumping, is the One Short Player of the Month for April. Well played that man.

Once again thanks must go to the JCL Umpire Panel who stood in Round Two:

  • Chiba Sharks vs Alpha Quashers: Robert Newman & Shrikhanth Durairaj
  • Rising Stars vs Tokyo Falcons: Chris Thurgate & Thulanidu Thirimanna
  • Sano CC vs Tigers CC: Darshak Bhuptani & Prashant Kale
  • Men In Blue vs Tokyo Wombats: Girish Deshpande & Shun Hashiba
  • Max CC vs Wyverns CC: Kris Bayne & Darshak Bhuptani

Finally, with the State of Emergency doing it’s best to scupper our cricketing ambitions for the Golden Week break, we remain upbeat about Round Three and a full complement of fixtures being played, even if under a slightly adjusted schedule. We shall wait to see and will of course be here to report it when the droplets settle. Until then, stay safe and always wear a box.

State of Emergency: Statement

Due to the calling of another State of Emergency in Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Hyogo, we do not feel it is appropriate for domestic club cricket to continue where participants need to cross borders between any prefecture that has been placed under a State of Emergency by the authorities.

We will be working with the tournament committees to find appropriate actions for all matches that are affected between Sunday 25th April and Tuesday 11th May and for that to be communicated to all teams as appropriate.

Furthermore, we must take the regrettable decision to postpone the Japan Premier League (JPL) which was scheduled for 1st – 4th May.

We recognise that this event involves a lot of work from the five regional committees and remain committed to ensuring that, as one of our priority events in the annual calendar, room can be found for it in what is already a congested fixture schedule. We ask everyone for patience as we try to confirm a new date which will be announced in due course.

We would also like to reiterate that, when involved in any competitions, our COVID-19 Guidelines are rigidly followed, and teams wear masks and distance as much as possible to ensure the safety and continued enjoyment of cricket for all concerned.

All of us at the JCA hope that everyone in our community, and their families, can stay safe and healthy in these challenging times and we are grateful for your patience and support as we try to navigate the challenges before us while still satisfying the playing requirements of everyone as best we can.

National Academy Squad for 2021 Announced

The National Academy Squad for 2021 has been confirmed with a host of new players selected as Japan looks ahead to World Cup Qualifying tournaments in 2021 and 2023.

Head Selector Simon Dart, and Head Coach Dhugal Bedingfield, ran the national trials on Sunday 11th April at the Sano International Cricket Ground where talented youngsters were tested on their cricket and fitness levels.

Mr Dart said: “It was great to get out into the field at last and see what young talent is out there. Of course, Japan went to the Under 19 World Cup last year but nobody wants that to be a one off, we want to be qualifying regularly so how we develop these young players is key.”

He added that there are now a number of young players living overseas with players such as Leon Mehlig and Jamie Fordyce now attending school in the UK, while Kento Ota-Dobell remains in Australia. Several other players of Japanese heritage are based overseas with the 30-player squad split between 20 in Japan and 10 elsewhere.

“Bringing the group together will be a challenge this year with the travel restrictions in place, but we hope we can do so as those players will bring a fresh approach and different experiences to the group which we see real value in.

The Under 19 World Cup Regional Qualifying event for the East Asia Pacific region is due to take place in Sano this September.

J-BASH Returns!

On Sunday 4th April the J-BASH launched the 2021 season in style at the Nagasawa Sports Ground in Kawasaki.

The morning included almost 50 ladies split across eight teams playing social cricket, many of whom doing so for the first time, while plenty of others were returning having enjoyed previous J-BASH Social days in 2020.

The enthusiasm and excitement was evident throughout the two hour session and the next event in May looks set to be another well attended event.

Following the social the J-BASH All Stars event returned with the teams again branded with Japan Women’s Team sponsors MKI (Team Pink) and Tech Mahindra (Team Yellow).

The match was remarkably similar to the 2020 contest where Team Pink won by 33 runs, this time winning by 32 runs. Yurika Kitamura again starred for Team Pink, as did Nao Tokizawa as both scored 29 runs. Shizuka Miyaji top scored for Team Yellow with 34 runs while Kiyo Fujikawa took three wickets to help her team win the match.

The All Stars matches are designed to bring the most talented female players in Japan together. Photos of the event can also be seen on the JCA Facebook page in this album. Photo Credit Rohan Gillet: www.tokyo-in-pics.com

Thank you to everyone who attended and supported another great event, especially Kenny Matsumura (Social Coach) and Darshak Bhuptani (All Stars Umpire). We all believe that the J-BASH can help grow women’s participation in cricket.

JCL Round One: Season Starts with Sakura & Centuries

It’s Back! Cricket is back! That’s right, the Japan Cricket Season has started on time this year and we’ve had some humdingers in Round One of the Japan Cricket League already!

The cherry blossom was out, Mount Fuji put in an appearance and there are even a couple of centuries to report. What a way to start the season, so let’s get to it.

The first league match of 2021 at the Sano International Cricket Ground featured the Chiba Sharks and the Men in Blue, two teams in transition and keen to get off to a good start.

With the Sakura in full bloom the Sharks went out to bat first and their early stroke-play matched the magnificence of the scenery as they raced to 139 after 23.3 overs before skipper Dhugal Bedingfield hit one to the fielder for a well-made 70.

His opposition skipper Gurdeep Dua had taken the catch and promptly got up to skittle the Sharks middle order. His 4/26 meant MIB bowled the Sharks all out for 227, a competitive score even on the fast outfields of early season.

In the chase Abhipray Dewan (62) and Ankit Panwar (51) put on a century stand for the third wicket to keep MIB in the hunt, but when they were dismissed in quick succession it looked like the game was up and the smart money was on Sharks seeing the match out. Hitesh Akabari had other ideas.

After taking a blow to the head from the bowling of Hamid Bacha (who had 3/19 at the time) in the 35th over, Akabari (32*) smoked successive sixes off Bacha (3/45) as 26 runs came from the 37th over. The equation quickly went from 48 runs needed from the last five overs, to 15 needed from the last three, a task that was completed with an over and five wickets to spare.

A bruising defeat for the Sharks and one sure to pump belief into the Men in Blue. Highlights are available on CricJP.

Further South at Sano Three another run chase was unfolding after MAX CC had posted an imposing 239/7 in their 40 overs against the Tokyo Falcons: courtesy of half centuries for Makoto Taniyama (61), Vinay Iyer (50) and Hanif Niazi (69). Abhi Telang (3/39) and Kuldeep Bisht (3/30) the best performers with the ball for Falcons.

Wickets then tumbled at the top as MAX came hard at the Falcons, the evergreen Takuro Hagihara (3/40) striking twice in the early stages. With Falcons looking dead and buried captain Sameep Dewar (61) and Tharindu Perera (70*) made a real fist of things batting at eight and nine respectively, suggesting that perhaps the batting order was the wrong way around.

(c) Takuro Hagihara

MAX held their nerve to close out a 22-run win, but Falcons will take plenty of heart from their lower order fight. Highlights of this match can also be seen on CricJP.

Even further south, and a little west, under the gaze of an adoring Mount Fuji, the Tokyo Wombats were up against the 2020 Runners Up in Alpha Quashers Yokohama.

The Quashers captain Rohit Kesari was the hero of the day, batting lower than usual at number six, he made an unbeaten 112 from just 69 deliveries, including five maximums. Making her Division One bow was Chelsea Moscript, and her leg-spin was the pick of the Wombats bowlers, taking 3/49 from her eight overs.

A total of 289/7 proved too tall a mountain to climb for the Wombats, but on a good weekend for captains, Alex Patmore certainly gave it a fair go, making 110 from 99 deliveries. He was ably supported to begin with by Richie Bracefield (44), but the Quashers bowlers chipped away and kept the Wombats to 246/6 to win by 43 runs. Tough for Wombats to swallow that one, having made the second highest team score of the round.

The following day Sano Cricket Club set out to show the league that they mean business this year and duly racked up 240 all out against the Rising Stars. Gagan Suri top scored with 65, while 36 off 30 balls for Shu Noguchi bodes well for a player many will be watching in 2021.

(c) Rohan Gillet

The Rising Stars were never really in the chase and five Sano bowlers picked up wickets on the way to bowling them all out for 153 to secure an 87-run victory with the Sakura again being perhaps the highlight of the game.

The defending champions, Tigers CC, had to wait a week to begin the defence of their crown, coming up against Wyverns in the “Match of the Round” as shown live on the JCA YouTube Channel.

Unfortunately the match was never a contest as Wyverns folded like a piece of paper in their batting innings, Tigers bowling them all out for 86 with Abhijith Sashikumar taking 5/23, the first five-wicket haul of the season. That Wyverns made even 86 was thanks to a tenth wicket partnership of 26, and when number 11 Masato Morita is the top scorer in your innings then it’s likely you don’t have enough runs to compete.

Thus, it proved as Tigers knocked off the runs for the loss of three wickets and with just 15 overs bowled. Tomo Oki was the only bowler to taste success, his 3/38 included Sabaorish Ravichandran for just 15 as he looked to get the game finished as fast as possible.

A quick thank you to the newly formed JCL Umpire Panel, who looked resplendent in their attire and played a vital role in making sure that all matches ran smoothly. We will be listing all the umpires as a way of doffing our cap to these outstanding individuals. All hail the following:

  • Chiba Sharks vs Men in Blue: Chris Thurgate & Mihindu Perera
  • MAX CC vs Tokyo Falcons: Rob Newman & Girish Deshpande
  • Alpha Quashers vs Tokyo Wombats: Kris Bayne & Shun Hashiba
  • Sano CC vs Rising Stars: Dev Mishra & Sagar Kamble
  • Tigers CC vs Wyverns CC: Chris Thurgate & Bahuddin Rubal

Japan Men’s National Squad 2021 Announced

Japan Men’s National Squad 2021 Announced

Simon Dart has announced his first squad as High-Performance Manager and Head Selector for the Japan National Men’s Squad. Three players come into the squad for the first time, while two others return.

Multiple Player of the Year winner Sabaorish Ravichandran, who becomes eligible this year after the recent change in the JCA eligibility criteria, brings all round quality to the group while many will be excited to see the return of Jun Yamashita after his absence last year.

The squad will work towards the Regional World Cup Qualifier to be held in Sano this October, and Dart said of his first squad:

“It’s an honour to be able to select people who are going to represent Japan in the future. I have been working towards this first squad since accepting the role last year and have watched players online and researched all the statistics, so feel well prepared despite the unfortunate loss of the trials.”

“Any change in coaching structure brings new opportunities, but those who have missed out will still be watched closely and I hope they respond well. I have a clear plan of how I want the team to play and am confident that the squad reflects that. Now we just need to get going and I can’t wait!”

The men will come together as a squad for the first time in late April and again during the Golden Week holiday. The full list of players is below, congratulations to all:
