Tsukuba Win Japan Cup

Tsukuba Cricket Club had a miraculous run to earn their first Japan Cup title, making amends for their defeat in the 2022 Final.

The 70-team tournament began on the final weekend of March and, more than 250 matches later, ended on Sunday 20th October.

Tsukuba lived on the edge throughout their campaign. They finished fourth in the East Kanto region, but defeated top of the table Falcons to reach the regional final and qualify for the national finals, before defeating the Tuskers to claim the East Kanto title.

In the national finals they eased through their first round match, but required a super over to knock out the defending champions Tigers Cricket Club, who had defeated them in that 2022 final.

In the semi final against Kobe Hawks they looked out of hope before taking the last six wickets for just nine runs to win the game.

An ability to fight to the very last served them well as they came up against first time finalists Serendib Leos in the national final. The Leos set Tsukuba a target of 107 and in a match that swayed one way and then the other throughout, they eventually got home off the final ball of the match with just one wicket to spare

The Nagoya Bengal Tigers finished in 5th place, winning the Shield Final, while Sano Cricket Club won the Plate Final, earning them a 9th place finish.

Japan Runners Up as Hong Kong Win East Asia Cup

Hong Kong claimed their third Women’s East Asia Cup title after a ten-wicket win over Japan in Incheon.

Batting first Japan had contributions down the order to post 108 for six after 20 overs.

The Japan batter struck three sixes, two from the blade of Haruna Iwasaki who gave the innings impetus with a 15-ball 22.

Although the Japanese bowlers kept things tight in the powerplay, breaking the imposing Hong Kong opening partnership of Natasha Miles and Mariko Hill proved an insurmountable challenge.

There was controversy in the ninth over when Japan strike bowler Ahilya Chandel was incorrectly prevented from bowling, having returned to the field within the allowed time.

Ultimately the quality of Hill (48*) and Miles (40*) was too much for Japan as they took their team home with ten wickets and 3.2 overs to spare.

Hill deservingly won the best batter award for the tournament, while Liu Mengting of China was named best bowler and tournament MVP.

Yanagida Inspires Japan to Win Against China

Captain Mai Yanagida dug her team out of trouble to book a place in the Women’s East Asia Cup Final in Incheon.

After winning the toss and batting first, Japan suffered a calamitous start as the China bowlers dismissed six out of the top seven for just eight runs.

Yanagida could only watch in dismay as chaos reigned at the other end, but was grateful to Seika Sumi who eventually offered some support.

The recovery came in a 42-run partnership for the seventh wicket, before another 21 runs were added for the eighth with Erika Toguchi-Quinn.

Yanagida brought up her second international half century from the final ball of the innings with her sixth boundary as she finished 51* from 60 balls, more than half the team total of 90 for nine.

Yanagida’s bowling attack remains the strength of the team and Nonoha Yasumoto, Shimako Kato and Toguchi-Quinn collected two wickets each to slow China’s chase.

Japan eventually had enough runs on the board, restricting China to 71 for eight and earning the win by 19 runs.

That means Japan will contest the tournament final tomorrow against defending champions Hong Kong who are chasing their third title, while Japan hope for a first.

Japan Defeat Mongolia at Women’s East Asia Cup

The Women’s Japan National Team earned a second win at the East Asia Cup by defeating Mongolia by 89 runs.

The win came after captain Mai Yanagida won the toss and chose to bat with several contributions as the team made 132 for six from their 20 overs.

Seika Sumi was the top scorer, making 26 not out as plenty of players got in but were unable to make a big score.

With the ball the spinners came to the fore, Yanagida in the wickets again with three for just five runs, while Kiyo Fujikawa also impressed with two for four on her first appearance of the tournament.

Shimako Kato (three for eight) nearly completed the win in style, grabbing three wickets in the final over, but narrowly missed out on a hat trick as Mongolia ended 43 for nine.

Japan will play China tomorrow morning with both teams on two wins and one loss, with the winner guaranteed a place in Sunday’s final against Hong Kong, who have confirmed their place with a game to spare.

Japan Defeat Korea at Women’s East Asia Cup

The Women’s Japan National Team bounced back from their opening day defeat to Hong Kong in the Women’s East Asia Cup to record a big win over host Korea.

Korea captain Song Seungmin won the toss and chose to bat, but that was as good as things got for the hosts. The captain battled gainfully to make 15, but nobody else made it to double figures as the Japanese bowlers, and fielders excelled.

Nonoha Yasumoto, Erika Toguchi-Quinn, Mai Yanagida and Elena Kusuda-Nairn all grabbed two wickets each, while Kusuda-Nairn also struck with a direct hit run out as Japan dismissed the hosts for just 36 in the 16th over.

Japan took the opportunity to try a new opening partnership and Seika Sumi and Ahilya Chandel took the score to 27 before the former was dismissed leaving captain Yanagida to strike the winning runs and earn her team the win by nine wickets with almost 15 overs to spare.

The team are next in action on Friday afternoon when they take on East Asia Cup debutants Mongolia.
