Hong Kong Overcome Japan in East Asia Cup Opener

The Women’s Japan National team began their latest attempt to win a first East Asia Cup title with a defeat to Hong Kong in Inchoen, Korea.

After winning the toss and bowling first, things looked good for Japan as Ahilya Chandel and Nonoha Yasumoto restricted the defending champions to just a single from the first two overs. That pressure led to the run out of Hong Kong Captain Natasha Miles for six.

Hong Kong showed why they are ranked 26 places above Japan with an impressive recovery. Mariko Hill (32 off 45 balls) and Shanzeen Shahzad (48 off 39) added 49 for the second wicket and led Hong Kong to an imposing total of 119 for four.

At a venue that has shown during the last two weeks that batting second can be tough, Hong Kong put pressure on the Japanese batters and early wickets quickly put them on top.

Single-figure scores for three of Japan’s top four left too much for the rest to do as Alison Siu struck twice in the second over of the innings. Although Hinase Goto battled hard for 23 (off 50), none of the Japanese batters were able to get close to the run-a-ball rate required and the innings eventually petered out at 75 for five from the 20 overs meaning a 44-run win for Hong Kong.

Japan will rest tomorrow and return on Thursday to take on Korea. All scores can be followed on the JCA Match Centre.

Japan Defeat Singapore 5-0

The Women’s Japan National Team wrapped up a 5-0 clean sweep against Singapore in Sano.

In the final match Haruna Iwasaki was the batting star, striking her maiden international half century to help the team to a total of 118 for six from their 20 overs.

Iwasaki (50 off 42 balls) combined with captain Mai Yanagida (24 off 40) for a partnership of 42 before being joined by her Sendai teammate Akari Nishimura (16* off 15) to add 46 for the sixth wicket.

Singapore made a steady start with the bat and at 76 for three in the 12th over looked like they might record a first win of the tour.

However, Japan took six wickets for just 13 runs as Yanagida (four for eight) ran through the lower order.

The win was sealed by 29 runs and gives the team a welcome confidence boost as they depart for the Women’s East Asia Cup in Incheon, Korea on Monday.

Japan Complete Perfect Tour With Indonesia Win

Japan finished the eight match tour of Korea with a 100% winning record after a huge victory over Indonesia.

On a day where everything went right for Japan, Captain Kendel Kadowaki-Fleming won the toss and chose to bat and proceeded to bat the whole innings.

More circumspect than normal, Kadowaki-Fleming waited until the 19th over to free his arms and eventually ended 85 not out from 64 balls.

He was ably supported by Lachlan Yamamoto-Lake (26), Ben Ito-Davis (29) and Sabaorish Ravichandran (26*) as Japan finished 173 for two from 20 overs.

The Japanese bowlers then did their part, dismantling the Indonesia batting line up. Piyush Kumbhare grabbed three cheap wickets while two run outs also showed the Japanese fire in the field.

Japan wrapped up victory in the 11th over bowling Indonesia all out for just 29 runs to secure a 144-run victory.

In the most match ceremonies Kadowaki-Fleming was named Best Batter and Tournament Most Valuable Player, while Sabaorish Ravichandran was also acknowledged for his contributions.

The team now awaits news on when and where the Asia/EAP Regional Final will be hosted, where they will take on Kuwait, Malaysia, Nepal, Oman, Papuan New Guinea and Samoa and two teams still to be determined from the Asia Region.

Bowlers Help Japan Take 4-0 Lead Over Singapore

The Women’s Japan National Team put together an excellent bowling performance in the fourth match of the series against Singapore.

After winning the toss and choosing to bowl in damp conditions, Singapore frustrated the Japanese batters, keeping the in-form Erika Oda away from the strike as she faced just 16 balls in the first ten overs.

Ishita Shukla then did some damage through the middle overs to have Japan in trouble at 67 for seven in the 15th over when Oda was dismissed for 19.

Japan rallied through Hinase Goto (15*) and Elena Kusuda-Nairn who put on a partnership of 31 to take the team to 98 for eight at the end of the 20 overs.

The Japanese bowlers and fielders then took the fight to Singapore with all five bowlers used taking wickets and three run outs being forced as Japan showed their quality in the second part of the game.

Shrunali Ranade was the pick of the bowlers, collected three wickets for just nine runs from her four overs, while Shimako Kato, Mai Yanagida, Nonohan Yasumoto and Kusuda-Nairn all picked up one each.

Japan took the last wicket in the 20th over to bowl Singapore all out for 56 and win by 42 runs

The fifth and final match of the series will start at 10 am on Sunday.

Japan Win Tournament After Beating Korea

The Men’s Japan National Team won the ICC Men’s T20WC East Asia Pacific – Sub-Regional ‘B’ 2024 with a thumping win over Korea in Incheon.

After winning the toss and batting first, captain Kendel Kadowaki-Fleming was imperious in striking 74 from just 56 balls as Japan posted a daunting 155 for seven from 20 overs.

Things did not go all Japan’s way as Fazil Muhammad (four for 27) struck twice in the first over, but Reo Sakurano-Thomas (39 from 36 balls) played an outstanding supporting role in a partnership of 86 from 68 balls with his captain.

Japan then struck twice in the third over of the chase, Piyush Kumbhare (two for seven) with one before Makoto Taniyama forced a run out with a direct hit to leave the Koreans reeling.

The hosts struggled to find a way back from there with six bowlers picking up wickets and just one batter making double figures.

Ben Ito-Davis finished with the best figures, his three wickets costing just eight runs as Korea were bowled out at the end of the 19th over for just 47.

The win, by 108 runs, is Japan’s seventh on tour and secures the teams place at the Asia/EAP Regional Final along with Kuwait, Malaysia, Nepal, Oman, Papuan New Guinea and Samoa.

There is still one match to go and the team aim to maintain a perfect tour when they take on Indonesia in the final match of the competition on Saturday afternoon at 14:00.

Japan Secure Series Win Over Singapore

Captain Mai Yanagida led the Women’s Japan National Team to an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five match series against Singapore at the Sano International Cricket Ground.

After winning the toss and choosing to bat, a much-changed Japan batting order went about accumulating a score with Yanagida to the fore.

Promoted to open the batting in the absence of the rested Erika Oda, Yanagida struck five boundaries on her way to a 45-ball 48, falling just short of what would have been a second T20 International half century.

Shimako Kato was the other main contributor, making 18 from 19 deliveries in a partnership worth 37 with her captain. The lower order then scrapped to a total of 111 for six in the 20 overs.

Japan started the defence of their target well by taking two wickets in the opening exchanges, before Vinu Kumar (40 from 42) and Roshni Seth (34 off 50) put together a partnership to frustrate the Japanese bowlers in the hunt for wickets.

The partnership of 73 from 78 balls kept Singapore afloat but Japan’s strong start meant that 22 were needed from the final over leading to both the set batters being run out while Kato also trapped the captain Shafina Mahesh LBW during an eventful finale.

Singapore ended 94 for five meaning a win by 17 runs and the series wrapped up with two matches to go.

The teams will return on Saturday for another 10 am start in the fourth match of the series.

Oda Best Too Good For Singapore

Erika Oda hit a maiden international half century as Japan cruises to a second successive nine-wicket win in as many days against Singapore.

After being asked to bowl, Ahilya Chandel picked up from where she left off in the previous match, striking three times in her first two overs, finishing with three wickets for nine runs.

Singapore made a recovery of sorts and were 48 for four at the halfway mark, a big improvement as Roshni Seth struck 21 from 25 balls to give her team some momentum.

Kurumi Ota (two for 12) removed Seth and Japan roared back into the contest to keep Singapore to 76 for nine from their 20 overs.

Enter Oda with clear intent. Batting with Haruna Iwasaki (13) the pair but on 50 for the first wicket, with Oda the dominant partner.

Striking eight boundaries, including the one which brought the winning runs, Oda reached her fifty from just 34 deliveries, a landmark she has missed out on multiple times in the last 12 months.

Oda finished 52 not out as Japan passed the total in the tenth over to take a 2-0 lead in the series.

The teams will rest on Thursday and return to action on Friday at 10am.

Japan Maintain 100% Record with Win over Philippines

The Men’s Japan National Team recorded a fourth win in succession, a sixth on tour and extended their overall winning streak to 12 matches by beating the Philippines in Incheon.

Winning the toss and batting first, Japan made a strong start as Kendel Kadowaki-Fleming (24 off 18 balls) and Lachlan Yamamoto-Lake (38 off 45) put on an opening stand of 49 in the powerplay, comfortably Japan’s best start of the tour.

Japan were made to work hard for runs in the remaining 14 overs Philippines captain Daniel Smith taking regular wickets on his way to figures of three for 23 which helped keep Japan to a manageable total of 121 for seven from 20 overs.

With the ball however, Japan were unplayable. Recovering from injury to play his first match of the tournament, Piyush Kumbhare opened with a maiden and set the tone right away. He backed that up with a stunning caught and bowled in his second over to dismiss the dangerous Smith and open the door for what was to come.

As pressure built due to the bowlers restricting the scoring, run outs came to the fore and Yamamoto-Lake created one before Ibby Takahashi forced a second to remove two of Philippines most dangerous batters.

Takahashi and Makoto Taniyama maintained pressure through the middle overs, picking up two wickets each before Sabaorish Ravichandran and Declan Suzuki grabbed one each to see the game out as the Philippines were kept to 94 for nine from their 20 overs.

The win by 27 runs puts Japan four points clear at the top of the table with two games to play, meaning one win from the last two matches will secure the title and progression to the next stage of World Cup Qualifying.

The team plays host Korea at 14:00 on Friday, 4th October.

Match Schedule (Japan Standard Time)

Tournament:

  • 28th September (Saturday) 10:00 – Japan vs Philippines (Japan won by 2 wickets)

Record-Breaking Ota Helps Japan Beat Singapore

Kurumi Ota became the Women’s Japan National Team’s leading wicket-taker as her team made the perfect start to the five match series against Singapore with a resounding nine-wicket win

After winning the toss and choosing to bowl, Japan kept things tight in the opening exchanges as Singapore found it difficult to score.

It took a run out to break the opening partnership in the eighth over, but GK Diviya battled hard to top score with 20 as wickets began to fall around her.

Ota’s big moment came in the 14th over as she Akari Nishimura took a high catch to dismiss Roshini Seth and Japan rode the wave of positivity to bowl Singapore all out for just 53 in the final over, Ahilya Chandel doing most of the damage with three wickets for just eight runs which earned her the MVP award.

The Japanese opening batters got their team off to a flyer from the start as both Hinase Goto (17 from 19 balls) and Erika Oda (29 not out from 24) struck boundaries to take Japan to 37/0 at the end of the powerplay and effectively end the game as a contest.

Oda ended things in the ninth over as she struck her fourth boundary of the innings, showing no ill-effects from the knee surgery she had just a few months ago.

Speaking after the match Ota (two for 12) said: “I am honoured to be the leading wicket-taker for Japan Women. I want to keep playing as long as I can and would like to thank everyone for their support.“

She now has 47 wickets in 71 matches, passing the previous holder Shizuka Miyaji who had 45 wickets in 75 appearances.
