Vanuatu defeat Japan in Match Two

Vanuatu beat Japan for the first time in their history at the Sano International Cricket Ground today.

Set only 62 to win, they chased down the small target for the loss of six wickets, inside 15 overs in their second match of the ICC Women’s World T20 Qualifier – East Asia-Pacific.

A fine all-round performance, including a magnificent straight six to win the match, by young spinner Nasimana Navaika (4-15 and 15*) led Vanuatu to victory.

Earlier, Japan got off to the worst start as Shizuka Miyaji was run out without facing from the very first ball of the match.

Captain Kurumi Ota (13) looked to be in good touch with a couple of lovely strokes to the boundary. She could not kick on and when she was caught at cover in the seventh over the Japanese batting collapsed,  going from 28-1 to 38-6 in the space of four overs.

Defending that total was always going to be a tough ask.

Vanuatu lost one early wicket but dropped chances early on made it difficult for Japan to put any serious pressure on the Vanuatu batters and they were cruising to victory at 41-1 after just seven overs.

However, it was a case of what might have been for the Japan players Vanuatu fell to 44 for 4. Shizuka Miyaji (1-7) was rewarded for her fine bowling and got the breakthrough wicket and in the very next over Kanae Ishimoto (3-19) picked up two wickets.

Kurumi Ota (1-9) also picked up a wicket towards the end but player of the match Navaika finished the match in style.

After the defeat, coach Katrina Keenan said: “The result was disappointing. We lost wickets and momentum after a good start with the bat. An extra 10-15 runs might have made a difference as the winning totals have not been that high in the tournament.”

Looking ahead to tomorrow’s match with Papua New Guinea, Keenan said: “PNG look very strong, well balanced but with pressure any team is vulnerable and we saw that today.”

In the earlier game of the day Samoa defeated Papua New Guinea by 16 runs to go top of the table after two wins from two. Thanks to some late hitting, Samoa posted 99-5 from their twenty overs. Papua New Guinea could not chase it down and were bowled out for 83.

The final matches from the first half of the tournament take place tomorrow with Japan playing Papua New Guinea from 1.30pm.

Grant Awarded to Develop SICG

100 Million Yen has been promised to Sano City Council to develop cricket by the Cabinet Office of the National Government of Japan.
In a statement made on the 28th of April, it was outlined that the chief purpose of the grant was to further develop the facilities already in place into an international standard ground.
Sano City has been supporting the “City of Cricket” project, run by the JCA, and aims to become the permanent home of Cricket in Japan. This commitment has already been demonstrated by the renaming of the former Tanuma High School as the “Sano International Cricket Ground” in 2016.
The national grant will be used by Sano City to start developing the facility in the current financial year.

Japan lose out to Samoa in opening match

Samoa cruised to a ten-wicket victory over Japan in the first match of the ICC Women’s World T20 Qualifier – East Asia Pacific.

Hosts Japan posted a low score of 70-8 from their 20 overs and Samoa chased down the target inside 13 overs and without losing a wicket.

Earlier Samoa had won the toss and elected to field first. They looked to use the early morning swing to put Japan under immediate pressure.

Japan got off to a steady start and were 18-0 after three overs, but the game changed when they lost captain Kurumi Ota (1) as she was run out backing up.

Shizuka Miyaji (27*) batted throughout the innings but struggled to build a partnership of any significance as regular wickets fell with Matile Uliao (2-5), the pick of the Samoan bowlers, frustrating the Japanese.

In reply, Samoa were assured in their approach of the run chase.

Japan started with an attacking field and a slip in place. But it was to no avail. Apart from a half chance of a catch Samoa did not give a sniff.

Shizuka Miyaji (0-13) bowled well from her four overs but openers Via Andrew (30*) and Player of the Match Lagi Telea (25*) batted sensibly and made light work of the target.

Japan need to make vast improvements ahead of their next match against Vanuatu at 1.30pm tomorrow.

After the match, coach Katrina Keenan said: “It was a disappointing batting performance, but we’ve identified some areas to work on and I would expect to see some improvements over the course of the tournament.”

In the day’s other match, Papua New Guinea defeated Vanuatu by 9 wickets. Vanuatu posted a score of 80 all out from 19.5 overs and Papua New Guinea chased it down with nine overs to spare.

JCL Round Two: Sharks Edge MAX in Thriller

The Chiba Sharks edged reigning champions MAX CC in a low-scoring thriller in Sano and demonstrated their team spirit and will to win at the same time.

MAX, batting first, managed only 149 in 25 overs, despite looking set for a much bigger total. Key batsmen were dismissed at vital times, with Pavethy Velusamy (3/12) the man causing most trouble. Dismissing both Supun Nawarathna (45 from 34) and Hanif Khan (25 from 15) opened the door for the returning Tsuyoshi Takada to rip out the tail and finish with 3/20.

Despite an opening stand between Muneeb Siddique (17) and Dhugal Bedingfield (48) worth 62, the Sharks suddenly lost six wickets for just 31 runs to be in real trouble at 93/6. Velusamy (35*) held things together until Sharks required just two runs with three wickets.

When Chula Rodrigo dismissed two batsmen in successive deliveries and the number 11 is a 17-year-old on debut, MAX smelt victory, but Krishna Bhatia, a product of Sharks youth teams, punched Rodrigo through the covers for the most celebrated 2* in quite some time to secure a one wicket win.

Elsewhere Sano CC also made it two wins from two and stayed at the top of the table with a 39-run win over the Tigers; with both teams being grateful to extras for being top scorer in each innings.

Batting first Sano were reduced to 105 all out with Imtiaz Khan taking 5/13, but Tigers never got going in the chase and fell over for just 66, with Rashid Rana taking 3 wickets without conceding a run.

Alpha Quashers of Yokohama grabbed their first victory in Division One and posted the highest score of the round with an imposing 223 all out in exactly 40 overs against Paddy Foleys. AQCC need to be very grateful to Gurman Singh, sho smashed 91 from just 69 balls coming in at number eight.

In the chase Ashiq Hussain held the innings together with 63, but four wickets for just nine runs from Bakkiyaraj Ramiah knocked the stuffing out of Paddys as they crumpled to 142 all out giving AQCC a win by 81 runs.

In the final match of the round, played a weekend later, Wyverns CC registered a crushing 105-run win over Tokyo Wombats. Batting first Wyverns racked up 208 all out with contributions from Raheel Kano (31) and Kazuyuki Ogawa (39) who’s low order hitting really propelled to a meaningful target.

Wombats, who struggled with the bat in their previous outing against Sano, were again in trouble early as Shodai Yamada (3/19) removed three of their top four, including key man Alex Patmore for just 11. Although Richard Laidler (25) offered some resistance in the middle order, Kano grabbed 3/27 to polish off the tail and dismiss Wombats for just 103.

Captain for the World T20 Qualifier Announced

The JCA are happy to announce that Kurumi Ota has been appointed as captain for the forthcoming Women’s World T20 Qualifier due to begin in Sano next week.

Assisting Kurumi will be Mai Yanagida, who has been appointed as vice captain for the tournament. The captain and vice captain will lead the team until the completion of the tournament.

Newly appointed captain, Kurumi has high hopes for the young team she will be leading saying, “We have a very young team that may lack experience, but the young players are showing great potential. We will be playing against the best teams in the region, so I think the key to our success is whether we can allow our young players to express themselves.”

She also called for support for the team by saying “We will bring all our strengths together as a team and aim to win each match at a time. We greatly appreciate the kind support we continue to receive and  would like to ask the cricket community in Japan, our friends and family to come and support us again.”

Vice captain Mai Yanagida said, “I’d like to support the captain and ensure team spirits are high so that we can play to our strengths. Playing at home is a great opportunity for people to show support. I’m sure the players will perform beyond their best with a strong home crowd.”

Craigengower Cricket Club Visit Japan

On the weekend of 15/16th April we were happy to host Craigengower Cricket Club (CCC) at the Sano International Cricket Ground four matches.

Two of these matches acted as warm up matches for the Japan Women’s Team in the lead up to the upcoming Women’s World T20 Qualifying tournament, and the other two were against Japan Development teams.

The Japan National Team comfortably won their games on Saturday and Sunday. In the first match Mai Yanagida won player of the match as Japan won by 114 runs and in the second match Shizuka Miyaji took the award as Japan won by 42 runs.

The other two matches were played against a Japan University XI and a Development side which included four girls under 15 years old.

It was the first time a Women’s University team has come together for Japan and we hope they will play many more matches in the future. CCC were too strong in both matches as they won by 8 wickets, Kary Chan was the outstanding performer in both matches for CCC.

The JCA would like to thank CCC for their outstanding sportsmanship and friendliness. It was a pleasure to welcome them to Japan and we hope that more exchanges can happen in the future.

Thanks also to all those who volunteered to score and umpire and those who came to support the teams in the matches.

The women’s team will play two more friendly matches on the weekend of April 22 and 23 before the tournament begins on April 28th.

JCL Round One: Opening Fire

The Japan Cricket League roared back into action last weekend with teams desperate to start on a strong note and set the standard for the season.

Sano CC registered the biggest win of Round One with a seven wicket destruction of the Tokyo Wombats, who last season were so quick out of the blocks.

Raj Pardan was the tormentor in chief as his leg-spin collected four wickets for just 12 runs as the Wombats managed a meagre 82 all out in 31 overs. Sano had little trouble knocking those runs off in 12.3 overs as Cathuta Aravinda guided the team home with an unbeaten 27*.

Two balls knocking over the stumps in succession for Alex Koolhof gave Wombats something to smile about, but the batsmen will need to come out of hibernation if they are going to live up to the standards set last year.

There were no such problems for the other pace-setters last year with both MAX CC and Chiba Sharks registering big wins.

Early season favourites and defending Champions MAX displayed their batting power with an eight wicket mauling of the Tigers thanks to a bruising century from Hanif Khan.

Batting first the Tigers did well to get to 190 all out having been struggling at 120/8 before Ashik Chowdury (41 from 20) and Imtiaz Khan (15* from 7) both partnered with Anil Kumar (22) to set a target that might have been defendable on a different day.

Wickets for spinners Makoto Taniyama (3/28) and Vinay Iyer (2/18) backed up the early good work by Kekeru Ebisui (2/18) before Khan took over the show.

Only 123 more were needed when Khan entered the fray at 68/2, yet he managed to strike 104* from just 46 balls with 11 sixes. No bowlers were spared and many others around the country will be hoping not to run into him in this mood.

The Sharks meanwhile, without four frontline bowlers, proved that experience of playing 40-over cricket counted for a lot as Alpha Quashers became Alpha Quashed.

The foundations of an 86-run victory were laid by the Sharks top order of Dhugal Bedingfield (77) and Dave Lollback (32) before Yosuke Higashimoto blasted 52* from 24 balls at the end to propel the total to 224/6; the highest of the round.

Devendra Dhaka with 3/27 was the pick for the Yokohama-based outfit, but none of their bowlers could match the display given by the Sharks young openers Rui Matsumura and Nozomi Tomizawa.

Dismissing four of the top five between them and having AQCC 23/4 in next to no time effectively killed the contest and, despite some battling at the end, a total of 138 all out in 33.3 overs will represent a disappointing start for the new boys, while the Sharks proved they have plenty of bite in store for all comers this season.

The final matchup of the round was between the two basement teams of 2016, Wyverns and Paddy Foleys; the latter without a league win since 2015. That run was finally ended, thanks in the main to the batting of Prashant Kale, who led them to victory by seven wickets.

Speaking after the match Tomoki Ota, Wyverns captain, lamented the inability to get rid of Kale early on and noted his ability to clear the boundary regularly is what proved the difference between the sides.

Round Two will take place over two weekends 15/16 and 22/23 of April and the tie of the round for sure will be Chiba Sharks up against MAX on Saturday 15th at Sano Ground 1.

*Please remember that if you have any good photos from matches we would love to see them and share them here on the blog, so just send them in to a-curr@cricket.or.jp (and he will pass them on to the mystery author of this blog) or get them up on your Facebook Pages.

**We would also love to have a Japanese version of our roundups so any budding writers out there keen to try their hand please do get in touch.
