Nepal Defeat Japan U16s

The men’s Japan Under 16 National Team were shown the standard to aspire to when they came up against defending champions Nepal in the East Zone Cup in Kuala Lumpur.

Nepal, who are regular winners of this competition, had the better of the contest from first to last at the KTJ Oval, earning a win by nine wickets.

Although Japan won the toss and chose to bat, they were unable to build on the excellent batting performance against Bhutan with the step up in quality from the bowling apparent.

Hugo Tani-Kelly played some attractive drives, including one glorious shot to the fence in the opening over, but fell trying to repeat the trick shortly afterwards against opening bowler Abhay Yadav.

The same bowler was too quick for Kaisei Kobayashi-Doggett as well, pinning the centurion from the previous match LBW in his fourth over.

Although captain Charlie Hara-Hinze showed some fight with a counter-attacking 36 from 48 balls, it was fellow left-arm spinner Shubham Khanal who undid the middle order taking five for 15 in his ten overs as Nepal restricted Japan to 80 all out in the 35th over.

The total never felt like enough against such a quality outfit, and while Kobayashi-Doggett drew a false shot from Joy Thapa to give Japan an early breakthrough, Prashiddha Jaishi (37*) and Shiwansh Bajgain (38*) did enough to steer Nepal to the total in the 15th over to wrap up the win.

Japan are next in action against Singapore on Thursday, in a must win game for both teams if they want to progress to the Semi-Finals.

Kobayashi Century as Japan Defeat Bhutan in ACC U16 East Zone Cup

A landmark century from Kaisei Kobayashi-Doggett led the Men’s U16 Japan National Team a huge victory over Bhutan on day one of the ACC East Zone Cup in Kuala Lumpur.

Bhutan won the toss and chose to bat, a decision which looked promising when Hugo Tani-Kelly was dismissed in the third over after a boundary-laced 19 from 15 balls.

That was as good as it got for the Bhutanese Japan took the contest away from them over the following two hours.

Opener Monty Hara-Hinze (60 off 85 balls) and Kobayashi-Doggett put on a partnership of 162 runs in 29 overs as Japan built an imposing total and shattered the Bhutanese captains hopes of keeping them under 100.

Although regular wickets fell following the end of the 2nd wicket partnership, cameos from Skyler Nakayama-Cook (30 off 29) and particularly Gabby Hara-Hinze (42* off 18) boosted the total to 312 for six from 50 overs.

The innings however, belonged to Kobayashi-Doggett, who became just the 7th player to score a century for Japan in all formats, and did so in the very first game for the Under 16 team.

His innings included nine boundaries and a six that was crashed over midwicket to show that Japan were taking control of the contest.

There was visible emotion upon reaching the milestone in the 38th over, having battled through the 90s as the extreme heat and humidity began to take its toll.

Despite batting for 109 balls for his total of 104, Kobayashi-Doggett then took the new ball and assisted Japan in making early inroads to the Bhutanese top order, trapping opener Jigme Sandrup LBW for a second-ball duck.

His new ball partner, Ishan Kumar Lal was the attack leader however, clean bowling two of the top four as Japan reduced Bhutan to 14 for three in the sixth over.

After that it was all about survival for Bhutan, but the left-arm spin of captain Charlie Hara-Hinze meant that Japan were able to get off the field without going the full 100 overs, his four wickets costing just 11 runs as Bhutan were all out for 97 in 37 overs as Japan completed the win by 215 runs.

Remarkably, Japan used ten different bowlers in the innings, with Tani-Kelly, Kouki Yoshida and Luke Mynard all collecting a wicket as Japan showed impressive depth with both bat and ball.

Next up for Japan will be defending champions Nepal on Tuesday.

Japan Defeat Hong Kong to Win Sano City Trophy!

The Women’s Japan National Team won their first trophy in 13 years after securing a first win over Hong Kong since 2019 to take home the Sano City International Trophy.

The win was largely thanks to some outstanding bowling from Erika Toguchi-Quinn, whose five for 14 are the best ever figures for the Japan Women’s Team.

Hong Kong started the day well, Natasha Miles winning the toss and opting to bowl. The Japanese openers of Ayaka Kato-Stafford (27) and Kurumi Ota (17) took Japan to the ten over mark without losing a wicket, and while Haruna Iwasaki injected a bit of momentum, the Hong Kong team would have been happy enough when Japan ended 99 for seven from their 20 overs.

Memories were fresh from last October, when Japan posted a similar total and Hong chased it down with ease to win the 2024 East Asia Cup, but even as Hong Kong accelerated to 43 for no loss inside eight overs, Japan remained calm and steadfast in their believe that breaking the opening partnership could bring further success.

So it proved. Ayumi Fujikawa made the initial breakthrough, dismissing captain Miles for 17 and suddenly the floodgates opened.

Hong Kong, ranked 22 places higher than Japan, were unable to handle the Japanese spinners, and it was redemption time for Toguchi-Quinn who had suffered at the hands of the same team in the first match of the tournament.

Showing incredible control and determination, the leg-spinner lured the Hong Kong batters into constant errors and the fielders remained calm to take their catches as wickets tumbled.

Japan were suddenly well on top and would go on to take all ten Hong Kong wickets for just 34 runs as they capitulated from 43 for no loss to 77 all out in 18 overs, former captain Kary Chan top scoring with 36 but unable to hold things together once wickets began to fall.

The win will be a huge confidence boost given key player Erika Oda was ruled out of the tournament in the first match, while Akari Nishimura was unable to play a role with the bat due to an injury sustained on the eve of the tournament.

Remarkably, two players from that last win in 2013, captain Mai Yanagida and all rounder Kurumi Ota, still remain in the team and have now added a new generation of winners as the team looks to move forward under new coach Vinay Iyer.

Tournament Awards:

  • Best Bowler: Liu Mengting (China)
  • Best Batter: Kary Chan (Hong Kong)
  • Most Valuable Player: Ayaka Kato-Stafford (Japan)

Japan Into Final After Defeating Philippines

The Women’s Japan National Team secured a place in the final of the Sano City International Trophy on Sunday by recording a big win over the Philippines.

In the first contest between the two sides, it was the Philippines who were on top for much of the first half of the game as the reduced the hosts to 44 for seven in the 14th over.

Leg-spinner JK Andreano was particularly impressive as she conceded just a single run from her four overs, and dismissed key batters Ayaka Kato-Stafford and captain Mai Yanagida.

Ayumi Fujikawa was held things together in the final overs of the innings, her 16* from 22 balls helping Japan finish on 83 for eight from their 20 overs and giving them something to defend.

An extra complication was that Japan knew they needed to dismiss Philippines for 54 or less to improve their net run rate by enough to leapfrog China on the points table and book a place in the Final.

While the Philippines batters were circumspect to begin with, reaching the ten over mark at 21 for two, things unravelled spectacularly after the drinks break.

Fujikawa was prominent again, taking three wickets in the 11th over on her way to figures of four wickets for just four runs.

More chaos followed in the 12th over as Erika Toguchi-Quinn struck with the second ball of the over, and then followed it up with a hat-trick from the final three balls as she collected four wickets for just five runs.

A run out completed the innings in the following over, rounding off a collapse of eight wickets for the cost of three runs in 17 balls.

After Hong Kong completed a routine win over Mongolia in the afternoon the final was confirmed as Japan vs Hong Kong at 14:30 while China will take on Philippines in the 3rd place play off. The loser of that match will have an additional match in the afternoon to play off against Mongolia for 4th place.

Japan Defeat China in Women’s Sano International Trophy

The Women’s Japan National Team recorded a comfortable win over previously unbeaten China on day four of the Women’s Sano City International Trophy to boost their hopes of reaching Sunday’s Final.

For the first time the tournament matches were able to start on time and Japan were quick to seize the initiative after winning the toss and choosing to bat.

New opening partners Ayaka Kato-Stafford and Kurumi Ota put on 58 for the first wicket before the latter was caught on 18 trying to accelerate the scoring rate.

Kato-Stafford continued the fine start to her international career by top scoring for a second match in succession, eventually stumped on 36 from 41 balls.

China were able to prize some momentum back as the Japanese middle order struggled to build on the strong start, and the innings closed at 94 for seven from 20 overs with eft-arm spinner Liu Mengting the pick of the Chinese attack with two for 18.

China looked to come out on the offensive and Li Jiaping whacked the second ball of the innings from Ahilya Chandel back over her head for four, but that would be as good as it would get for the Chinese batters.

Nonoha Yasumoto dismissed Jiaping in the 5th over and from then on the Japanese bowlers were able to wrestle momentum back. Chandel returned to pick up two while Kato-Stafford also grabbed her first international wicket as well as a run-out to secure the MVP award.

Kurumi Ota took three valuable wickets in the middle of the innings, finishing with three for 13, and China were unable to bat their overs with Japan taking all ten wickets for 70 runs to earn a 24-run win.

In the afternoon game the Philippines were convincing winners against Mongolia, winning by 118 runs to set up a showdown with hosts Japan tomorrow morning.

Hong Kong & China Win As Women’s Trophy Begins

Hong Kong and China both recorded wins as matches eventually got underway on Day Two of the Women’s Sano City International Trophy.

The morning match between hosts Japan and tournament favourites Hong Kong was impacted by the overnight rain, but Japanese players and staff all worked hard to dry the key areas so a game could be played, eventually starting a nine-over contest just after midday.

Having won the toss and opted to bowl, Japan had chances in the field but the opening pair of Natasha Miles (34 from 23 balls) and Kary Chan (36 from 30) put on 77 for the opening partnership on the way to 86 for three from none overs, which looked a formidable total.

Although Japan showed some defiance with the bat, Chan was again prominent with the ball, striking twice in her opening over to severely dent the Japanese chase.

Debutant Ayaka Kato-Stafford held things together with 28* from 25 balls, but could only carry Japan up to 67 for three meaning a win by nine wickets for Hong Kong.

In the afternoon a boisterous contest between China and Philippines ended in a five wicket win for China for whom Ma Ruike starred. After winning the toss and opting to bowl, the Chinese captain would have been delighted as Ruike took four wickets at the cost of just a single run to bowl Philippines out for 50.

Karri Keen gave the Philippines plenty to cheer about in the field, taking three for 11 herself, but China were able to pass the total in the 15th over for a relatively comfortable win.

Play continues on Thursday.

Mamushi Win WJPL 2025

Mamushi won the 2025 edition of the Women’s Japan Premier League courtesy of a 14-run win over the Pacific Rays at the Sano International Cricket Ground.

The tournament had been thrown into turmoil after match days three and four were both completely washed out by heavy rain, but extraordinary efforts by the ground staff enabled the teams to battle it out on the final day.

Mamushi, who went through the group stages unbeaten, batted first in the final and fought hard to post 112 for six from their 20 overs, with Erika Oda once again setting things up with 32 from 38 balls at the top of the order.

There were contributions from the middle order as well, most notably 21* from just 15 balls from Alisha Bates, coming at a time when the Pacific Rays bowlers had done well to stop the scoring from getting away from them as five of their bowlers took wickets and three went at under four an over.

A target of 113 looked getable but would likely need a sizable contribution from captain Makinley Blows. However, her dismissal to a stunning catch by Malsha Shehani from Ayaka Kato-Stafford’s first ball was a significant setback.

Nethmi Senarathna played the anchor role, keeping things together with 30 from 41 balls before another good catch, this time from Mamushi Captain Chelsea Moscript off her own bowling, brought an end to her innings.

Grace Dignam (18 off 10) picked up the baton and gave the Rays a fighting chance as she struck Moscript for six and four in quick succession, however when Kurumi Ota cleaned bowled her at the start of the 19th over the writing was on the wall.

The Rays were eventually restricted to 98 for six leaving Mamushi to celebrate a title in their first year as a Japanese Franchise.

In the morning the match between the Titans and the Pacific Rays was reduced to ten overs per side and while Tebogo Macheke looked good for 30* from 24 balls to lead the Titans to 50 for six from their ten overs, Nethmi Senarathna made short work of the chase with her 32* from 21 balls.

The win was really set up by an excellent opening spell by Vivian Field who struck three times in the first three overs to have the Titans on the back foot and put the Rays on the way to a nine-wicket win.

The individual award were presented as follows:

  • Batter of the Tournament: Erika Oda (107 runs at an average of 35.67)
  • Bowler of the Tournament: Ayaka Kato-Stafford (8 wickets at an economy rate of 4.87)
  • Tournament MVP: Malsha Shehani (93 runs & 8 wickets & 4 catches)
