Hosts UAE made a winning start in the Under 19 Asia Cup with a 273-run win over the Men’s Japan Under 19 team in Sharjah on Saturday.

Winning the toss and choosing to bat was the perfect start for the 2023 runners up, and Aryan Saxena made sure his team cashed in on some good fortune in the opening overs.

Saxena made 150 from 120 balls in a partnership of 213 in 33.3 overs with Akshat Rai (53) before Kiefer Yamamoto-Lake struck twice in an over to dismiss both.

Yamamoto-Lake was a threat throughout and finished with figures of four for 42, extending his record as the leading wicket-taker in Japan Under 19 history, with 31 in 15 matches.

Japan fought hard throughout the first innings with some excellent high catches being taken late on as UAE finished on 325 for seven from their 50 overs.

Although captain Koji Hardgrave-Abe and Nihar Parmar briefly looked comfortable after losing Aditya Phadke first ball, three run outs and a stumping contributed to a swift end to the chase as UAE took all ten wickets for just 52 runs.

The match was also notable for Kai Wall making his debut and becoming the 71st player to represent Japan at Under 19 level.

Japan are next in action against giants eight-time winners India on Monday.
