The Women’s Japan National team began their latest attempt to win a first East Asia Cup title with a defeat to Hong Kong in Inchoen, Korea.
After winning the toss and bowling first, things looked good for Japan as Ahilya Chandel and Nonoha Yasumoto restricted the defending champions to just a single from the first two overs. That pressure led to the run out of Hong Kong Captain Natasha Miles for six.
Hong Kong showed why they are ranked 26 places above Japan with an impressive recovery. Mariko Hill (32 off 45 balls) and Shanzeen Shahzad (48 off 39) added 49 for the second wicket and led Hong Kong to an imposing total of 119 for four.
At a venue that has shown during the last two weeks that batting second can be tough, Hong Kong put pressure on the Japanese batters and early wickets quickly put them on top.
Single-figure scores for three of Japan’s top four left too much for the rest to do as Alison Siu struck twice in the second over of the innings. Although Hinase Goto battled hard for 23 (off 50), none of the Japanese batters were able to get close to the run-a-ball rate required and the innings eventually petered out at 75 for five from the 20 overs meaning a 44-run win for Hong Kong.
Japan will rest tomorrow and return on Thursday to take on Korea. All scores can be followed on the JCA Match Centre.
