After the Japan Cup finals were abandoned last October we have had to wait even longer, the coronavirus wiping out the first three months of the 2020 season. Finally, we were able to see first cricket of the year, the Japan Cup season opener taking place in Sano on July 4th between Tsukuba and Tokyo Falcons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite a few teams choosing to sit out this season, 42 teams will take part across the seven regions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year the Japan Cup Finals is scheduled to take place in Sano over two days on the weekend of October 10th and 11th due to there being no long weekend in October this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the first time the JCA are publishing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cricket.or.jp\/japan-cup-rankings\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Japan Cup team rankings<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Teams can measure their success against every other team in Japan. Teams will move up and down on the rankings table based on their performances. The rankings will be updated at the end of each season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cricket.or.jp\/archives\/competition\/japan-cup\/japan-cup-west-kanto\">WEST KANTO<\/a> has been won by the <\/span><b>University XI <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for the last three years but this year the students will face some strong opposition. <\/span><b>Tokyo Rhinos<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will be looking to get revenge after finishing top of the table but losing the West Kanto final last year. Look for <\/span><b>Wyverns <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to bounce back after a disappointing end to 2019 and last year\u2019s semi finalists <\/span><b>Beans <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also appear to be getting stronger. <\/span><b>Akishima Aviators<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are the youngest team in the league but have plenty of talent while <\/span><b>Adore <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will also be looking for improvement. And what can we expect from the two new teams <\/span><b>Serendib <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Kawasaki Strikers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? This could be the most even region in Japan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There has been plenty happening in <a href=\"https:\/\/cricket.or.jp\/archives\/competition\/japan-cup\/japan-cup-kinki\">KANSAI<\/a> during the off season. A new cricket ground is under construction in Kaizuka which is set to be the home of cricket in the region. The ground isn\u2019t ready for use yet but there is plenty of excitement around it. Defending champions <\/span><b>Shiga Kyoto<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> won\u2019t be competing now so <\/span><b>Kobe Hawks<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will be strong favourites to win the region. Expect <\/span><b>Osaka Raiders<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to improve on last year\u2019s results and <\/span><b>Keihan Blaze<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are also capable of competing against the best. <\/span><b>Kansai Tigers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are sure to improve but the three new teams in the region are unknown quantities. <\/span><b>Osaka Lions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span><b> Royal Osaka Tigers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> appear for the first time, as do <\/span><b>Kaizuka Aegirs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who will fly the flag for the new <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">City of Cricket in Kansai.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Men In Blue<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have a monopoly on the <a href=\"https:\/\/cricket.or.jp\/archives\/competition\/japan-cup\/japan-cup-east-kanto\">EAST KANTO<\/a> trophy, having won the last four years, but could this be the year that another team finally breaks the cycle? <\/span><b>Tsukuba <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">were a close second last year and look the team most likely to beat the defending champions. The newly named <\/span><b>Tokyo Rangers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are a club on the rise while the <\/span><b>Tokyo Falcons<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> continue to grow stronger. <\/span><b>Rising Stars<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will surely improve on last years efforts and the <\/span><b>Chiba Sharks<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have been inconsistent but are capable of beating anyone on their day. East Kanto could be a tight race this year!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cricket.or.jp\/archives\/competition\/japan-cup\/japan-cup-north-kanto\">NORTH KANTO<\/a> champions and 2018 national champions <\/span><b>Ceylon XI<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have decided to sit out this season, leaving the region wide open for a new champion to emerge. Could this be the year that the young <\/span><b>Sano <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">team return to the top? No fewer than six new teams have joined the region this year so it is almost impossible to predict what to expect. The <\/span><b>Roaring Tigers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have a strong squad and will probably feature in the semi finals. <\/span><b>Tokyo Titans<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have moved back to the North and are a club on the rise. Rumours are that <\/span><b>Sultans of Japan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will have plenty of fire power. <\/span><b>MIB Challengers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Jaggar Falcons<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have signed some handy players and will be competitive. <\/span><b>Pakistan Stars<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> make a return after a two year absence and could also challenge.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year <a href=\"https:\/\/cricket.or.jp\/archives\/competition\/japan-cup\/japan-cup-south-kanto\">SOUTH KANTO<\/a>\u2019s eight teams will be divided into two divisions with all matches to take place at the Yokohama Country &amp; Athletic Club. Winners for the last four years, <\/span><b>Alpha Quashers Yokohama<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are yet again the team to beat. If anyone can challenge them it\u2019s the <\/span><b>Tigers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who had a much improved season last year.\u00a0 <\/span><b>Indian Engineers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have always been a strong T20 team and will take some beating while the <\/span><b>Tokyo Wombats<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are a proud club that can never be underestimated. Looking to Division 2, <\/span><b>YC&amp;AC<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will be hoping to finish top and win promotion. However, <\/span><b>Keio Knights <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have recruited well and could threaten for the division title. <\/span><b>British Embassy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Aoyama Gakuin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were both winless last year. At least one of those teams will pick themselves off the bottom of the table and challenge for glory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/cricket.or.jp\/archives\/competition\/japan-cup\/tokai\">TOKAI<\/a> region has gone through some structural changes in the off-season and this year four teams will take part.\u00a0 <\/span><b>Ebina<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will be the front runners, having competed well in South Kanto last year in their debut season. There has been a lot of talk about the new club <\/span><b>Kawasaki Knight Riders<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> so expect them to perform well. <\/span><b>Aichi Warriors<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>AQ Kings<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are both new this year but the word is they have plenty of talent in their squads. It could be a close battle at Fuji this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lastly, there is some excitement around the <a href=\"https:\/\/cricket.or.jp\/archives\/competition\/japan-cup\/japan-cup-tohoku\">TOHOKU<\/a> region with news that plans are being made for the construction of a new ground in Shichigahama.\u00a0 In the mean time, matches will be played at a temporary ground nearby. <\/span><b>Sendai CC <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Sendai Lions XI <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are the only teams in the region at the moment and both are evenly matched. It is hoped that a \u201cCity of Cricket\u201d can be established in Shichigahama and a thriving cricket comunity can grow there in the future.<\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s been a frustrating time for club cricketers in Japan.
