{"id":11187,"date":"2019-05-16T16:05:43","date_gmt":"2019-05-16T07:05:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cricket.or.jp\/?p=11187"},"modified":"2019-06-26T10:13:51","modified_gmt":"2019-06-26T01:13:51","slug":"2019%e5%b9%b4%e3%82%b8%e3%83%a3%e3%83%91%e3%83%b3%e3%82%ab%e3%83%83%e3%83%97%e9%96%8b%e5%b9%95","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cricket.or.jp\/en\/2019%e5%b9%b4%e3%82%b8%e3%83%a3%e3%83%91%e3%83%b3%e3%82%ab%e3%83%83%e3%83%97%e9%96%8b%e5%b9%95\/","title":{"rendered":"2019 Japan Cup Preview"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/cricket.or.jp\/en\/archives\/competition\/japan-cup\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Japan Cup<\/strong><\/a> continues to expand and in 2019 no fewer than 41 teams will be participating in Japan\u2019s national T20 cricket competition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Japan Cup will again culminate in a three day finals series in Sano on the long weekend of October 12-14.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 2018 Japan Cup was one to remember, the final ending in a tie between <\/span><b>Ceylon XI <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Alpha Quashers Yokohama<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before being decided with a Ceylon XI six on the last ball of the super over. Let\u2019s look at how season 2019 may pan out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cricket.or.jp\/en\/archives\/competition\/japan-cup\/japan-cup-west-kanto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">West Kanto<\/a> <\/strong>has become an interesting group with the addition of two new, exciting teams. <\/span><b>Adore<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have been JCL stalwarts for a number of years but how will they fare in T20? <\/span><b>Tokyo Rhinos<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are rumoured to have some hidden talent and could surprise a few teams. <\/span><b>University XI<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the most disciplined team in the region, are attempting to win West Kanto for the third year in a row but it might not be so easy this year. Inconsistency plagued <\/span><b>Wyverns<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last year but their experienced players may be ready to fire. <\/span><b>Akishima<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are inexperienced but are building for the future while <\/span><b>Beans<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are always good for at least one upset a season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s been a busy off season in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cricket.or.jp\/en\/archives\/competition\/japan-cup\/tokai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tokai<\/a><\/strong> with new teams popping up from left, right and centre to form what could be the most open and exciting T20 league in Japan. It\u2019s almost impossible to predict who might finish on top but <\/span><b>Nagoya Bengal Tigers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> would have to be the favourites after some impressive performances last year. Of the newcomers <\/span><b>Aichi <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are a club on the rise and <\/span><b>Mervicks <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have some seasoned cricketers who could form a formidable unit. <\/span><b>Tsushima <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will be hoping for some early wins while <\/span><b>Fuji <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have plenty of experience to draw upon. \u00a0It\u2019s hard to know what to expect from <\/span><b>Suzuka <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but don\u2019t discount them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looking Westwards, the <a href=\"https:\/\/cricket.or.jp\/en\/archives\/competition\/japan-cup\/japan-cup-kinki\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Kansai<\/strong> <\/a>group is as exciting as it has every been, expanding to six teams in 2019. Big hitting <\/span><b>Kobe Hawks <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brushed all aside last year and deserve their status as favourites for this year. However,<\/span><b> Osaka Raiders <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">might be ready to pounce after mixed results in their first year. <\/span><b>Keihan <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are bursting with athleticism and youthful enthusiasm and will be a hard team to beat. Perhaps the youngest team in the Japan Cup are <\/span><b>Uenomiya<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who have been \u00a0a factory for producing national team players. Shiga have the experience to finish near the top of the league while new boys <\/span><b>Kansai Tigers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will bring an international flavour to the league.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The redevelopment of the Sammu ground is complete and this year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/cricket.or.jp\/en\/archives\/competition\/japan-cup\/japan-cup-east-kanto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>East Kanto<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0league promises to be highly competitive. <\/span><b>Men In Blue<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have been the force in the region and it would be brave to bet against them this year. <\/span><b>Nippon Tigers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> could be the team to challenge after a successful first season last year while the <\/span><b>Chiba Sharks<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will fancy themselves after a return to T20 form. <\/span><b>Tokyo Falcons<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are well organised and are every chance to be there at the end. Also watch out for <\/span><b>Tsukuba<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who are full of talent, and also <\/span><b>Rising Stars<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who may be ready to step up a notch this year. <\/span><b>Tokyo Titans<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are the wild card of the group.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/cricket.or.jp\/en\/archives\/competition\/japan-cup\/japan-cup-north-kanto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>North Kanto<\/strong><\/a> the 2018 national champions <\/span><b>Ceylon XI<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are highly fancied to qualify in first place again but they will face stiff competition from a youthful but talented <\/span><b>Sano <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">team. <\/span><b>Rakuten<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are expected to improve on last year\u2019s efforts while newcomers <\/span><b>GIIS-Tigers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will be the unknown quantity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/cricket.or.jp\/en\/archives\/competition\/japan-cup\/japan-cup-south-kanto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>South Kanto<\/strong><\/a> league has always been tough to qualify from and this year 10 teams will be fighting it out at the Yokohama Country &amp; Athletic Club. 2017 Japan Cup champions and last year\u2019s runners up <\/span><b>Alpha Quashers Yokohama<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are again the team to beat but there are plenty of teams that will challenge them. <\/span><b>Tigers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have yet to fire in the T20 format but could 2019 be their year? <\/span><b>Indian Engineers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will be full of confidence after going all the way to the national semi-finals last year and <\/span><b>Tokyo Wombats<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can never be underestimated. First time Japan Cup participants <\/span><b>Shonan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Ebina<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are fancied to cause some upsets and the <\/span><b>British Embassy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are also a growing force. Aoyama Gakuin are slowly becoming a competitive outfit while <\/span><b>Keio Knights<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are tipped to be the big improvers in the region. Finally, let\u2019s not forget the oldest cricket team in Japan, the <\/span><b>YC&amp;AC<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They might be at long odds to win the Japan Cup but have a habit of causing upsets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lastly, <a href=\"https:\/\/cricket.or.jp\/en\/archives\/competition\/japan-cup\/japan-cup-tohoku\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Tohoku<\/strong><\/a> will again feature two teams. Matches will be played in Shichigahama, a city that will hopefully become the \u201ccity of cricket\u201d in the region. <\/span><b>Sendai CC <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Sendai Lions XI <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will lock horns in a five match series which is sure to be hotly contested.<\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Japan Cup continues to expand and in 2019 no fewer than 41 teams will be participating in Japan\u2019s national T20 cricket competition.
